Great Deal on Mac Mini 1.66 / 80 GB / Superdrive

Hi, after years of denial, I'm now officially a mac convert!

I just wanted to pass along a deal I got in case there are others waiting on a good price to make the jump.

Compusa has been advertising a closeout special on the MA206LL/A -- SKU 338490 Mac Mini, which is the Core Duo 1.66 with 512 MB / 80 GB / DL Superdrive, for $649. If you go to their website, click on locations, pick a location, then click on the "blowout items" link, you can see if the store closest to you has it.

So, I went to my store on 2 separate occasions, since my store was reported to have 2 in stock. First, they said they didn't have them any more. The 2nd time, a guy went in and looked around in the back room, and was able to find one. At checkout, I discovered that they were discounted for an additional $130 off, making the final price $519.98!!!!

Many of the Compusa stores I checked at random still listed these in stock, so if you have been concerned about the price of the mini, this should help.

That is a great deal!!! I just got a 1.66 same specs for $649 refurb'd from Apple. However I did save $100 due to the printer rebate. If you can get one from CompUSA for the extra $130 go that way, but if it is $649 order the refurb from Apple and get a free/discounted printer. I got a $199 printer for $99, or a $199 printer and a $549 Mini. Still $519 is a smoking deal on that machine. Do you self a favor, go to datamem.com or macsales.com and get 2x512 or 2x1GB memory and upgrade it. 512 is ok, but 2gigs flys.
 
Wow, that's a great price. My local store has a few core solos for $449.98. I wonder if there's an extra discount involved for them as well.

I didn't ask, because I was at the checkout when I found out. That is actually the machine I was planning on getting, and it was their display unit. Figured it would have been a good unit to do a chip upgrade on later!

I'm calling my Tulsa location now.

::: eh, no dice for me. They had a core solo refurb for $499 and a regular core duo 1.66 for $599. I asked if that was the price at the register, she said that is the only price she can see. Oh well.
 
Yeah, CompUSA is really clearing out their stuff. They had a 20" ACD for only $500 NEW. I was tempted but didn't have the cash for it.
 
That is an awesome price for that configuration.

I checked with the local CompUSA and all they had was a battle worn 1.5 single marked as $449 managers special.

I asked an employee and he looked up the SKU of 338490 and said it showed a price of $649.

I would jump all over that configuration at that price.

Keep in mind that the additional $130 discount doesn't show up in the system, but kicks in at checkout (or at least it did in my case on Nov 2nd).

The list price in my case was $649 as well....

If I am reading this right, you bought a display model of an older revision, which would explain the additional discount.

Apple does the same thing, sells display units for less than a returned/refreshed unit because it was used in the store. BTW, I would never buy a notebook or iPod from Apple or anywhere else that was a display unit, simply because the thing has probably been plugged in 24/7 meaning, the battery is shot.

I doubt all 1.66 Core Duo Superdrives are $519 at CompUSA, probably only the display units.

No, there wasn't a code of any sort, just a $130 off.

The unit I bought was not a display model, and the box had never been opened. The unit booted up with the initial setup routines.

So yes, I did get a 1.66 Core Duo Superdrive unit for $519. I'm glad to know it was a good deal!

I located a CompUSA that had a display unit still of the 1.66 with Superdrive (SKU 338490) and that rang at the register as $649.

ALmost all clearance inventory in the stores get %20 off until tomorrow night. We have two 1.66 models and a core solo still in stock. 2 of which are still sealed box. They are listed in the system for 649 and 449. When they get to the register and they actually press total it will take off the 20% instantly. He is infact right and didnt get a special deal or anything. This ,again, is only until tomorrow.

I am now a proud mac owner! I bought my first mac yesterday after reading this thread and i just wanted to say thanks to the person that posted the info regarding the deal at compusa. I had been thinking about purchasing a mac since this past June but just could never pull the trigger...yesterday I couldn't wait to pull that trigger!

Final price was $959 after the extra 20% discount.

OldSkoolNJ - thanks for the explanation of the 20% special. After you posted that I found the reference to it on the CompUSA front page. Funny no one at the store I visited could tell me about that even when I asked them about people reporting getting 20% off on the discontinued mini.

After your post I checked and found a store in Jersey (near a friend) that had the 1.66 duo in stock. A quick phone call later I scored that model for $519. The painful part is she can't ship the package until today.

Clindner thanks for the original post that put us on track for the deal!!

Next up track down a deal on 2GB of memory and wait for the Fed Ex man to bring my package.
 
I'm glad to hear a few other people were able to take advantage of the CompUSA sale!

Great Awesome Woohoo. But where were you with this on 10.24 when I ordered my refurb 1.66 SD 80GB for $649. Well at least I got $100 rebate on a printer, but I would have taken the $130 and bought the printer for less somewhere other than Apple. Oh, well. I guess I just couldn't wait another day.

Actually no worries Curt, had I waited 1 more day I would have saved $475 on a 24" iMac which is really what I wanted. There seems to be some cruelty at every corner.

BTW, got 2GBs in my 1.66 now and used Handbrake to Rip a couple movies, not at ipod but full res, 2000 avg bit rate, 48000hz 160kbps audio, averaging 55-65 fps per movie on the mini. I think one took 35 min, the other 28. The first was 2h10min running time the other 2hr3min.
