I recently received an email from my university's listserve about a very limited supply of macbooks on sale at the bookstore. The price is $650. I did a little quick research before I left to pick up this offer. I am just wondering if I am missing something or if this is a great deal?

It is the 1.83ghz core duo, 512mb ram, 60gb....

I see on Apple's website that the macbooks are now core 2 duo? What is the difference?

Looking on ebay it seems like I could get $1000 for this thing, and also the macrumor's buyer's guide lists this machine as starting out at $950 new.

So, am I missing something, or is this a steal of a deal and I should go pick up another one before they're gone?

Thanks,
Jesse

does the core duo processor have the same 64bit processing capabilities as the newer core 2 duo processor?

this might be worth considering for when leopard is released.

Yes it does. There really isn'ta tremendous speed difference between the two- I think it's like 15 - 20 %.

An AWESOME deal, if you ask me.

i'm sure i read somewhere that core (1) duo did not fully support 64 bit (intel disabled the architecture on the chip)

core 2 duo was intel's fully 64 bit processor to rival AMD's turion and semprons.

please correct me if i'm wrong, i'm still not entirely sure...

You are right, but even then at that price it is insanely worth it.
