Right, so after waiting impatiently for my PayPal moneys to clear through, i receive my MacBook Air in the post this morning!

Got a pretty good deal, as I only paid £700 for it!

But wait... there's more!

Turns out the lister didn't list the item correctly, and I've got the 1.8GHz model with SSD!!

Thats because it could just as well be someone who doesn't know a lot about tech pricing and has listed the laptop for that price after seeing thats what the 1.6GHz version usually goes for?

That certainly may be true but you answered "You've probably got a good point!" (exclamation point yours) about a warning that you shouldn't register it with Apple in case it's been reported stolen. Not "I hope that isn't true" or anything like that?

Why would it matter if he registered it with apple? even if it was reported stolen, they wouldn't take any action, they would just say "oh ok, well let's re-register your mac to your name".

I know this because last year I bought my girlfriends macbook off of craigslist, and just a couple weeks ago we bought apple care for it before the year warranty ran out. Apparently the MB belonged to a school district (which apple wouldn't disclose) and Apple didn't even bother asking any questions, they just let us re-register the MB to my girlfriends name.

If he reported it to Apple, they may not do anything about it. If he reported his new laptop to the police as "maybe stolen", and the police found that someone did report this laptop stolen not long ago, he'll lose his laptop and NOT receive ihs £700 back.

You must be a very generous man if you're willing to lose £700 without flinching.

Anyway, I don't think it would have been stolen, especially if it came with the AC adapter. If it didn't, then something's wrong.

true story...

i bought mine on craigslist 1300 in april. good deal but not unreal. july comes around i get a call from the police. they want to meet. turns out laptop was stolen and hey guess what i am in possession of a stolen item. therefore i could have definitely been arrested, but thank god the detective believed my story that i had no idea it was stolen and she didn't arrest me. but i had to give it to the police and of course didn't see my money again. i could get my money if some sort of prosecution goes through, but im not counting on it. all in all, i lost $1300 and had to buy a new laptop...

so i had an "if i had to do it all over" situation. i really considered going for the pro but i went to the apple store and fell in love with the air all over again.

im just thankful i didnt get arrested and learned the hard way to get everything in paper (i really had no proof i bought it from this guy, once again thank god the detective was merciful), and if something is too good to be true, it is! ask for proof of purchase if your really want to go through craigslist. but for me this was enough to scare me to only buy through reputable resellers.

There have been stories of people having their laptops stolen, reporting the serial number to Apple as stolen, the thief (or an unaware purchaser) brings the laptop in for a repair, Apple checks the serial in the their database and calls the cops.

Because it's entirely too hard to steal the adapter while you're stealing the laptop? "I'm in this dorm room stealing this laptop but I just don't feel like bending down to unplug the adapter from the socket!" Or you couldn't just buy a replacement adapter to avoid suspicion?

I'm not saying it's for sure stolen, I just think it's silly that people can't imagine a scenario where both are stolen.

That makes me wonder. If it was stolen, why would it be listed as a low-end model and for the usual price of it? The whole idea of "it's cheap, it might have been stolen" is connected with the thief supposedly trying to rid of the thing as soon as possible, if I understand correctly. So it should have been listed as high-end and cheaper than they go.

Maybe he didn't know it was SSD because he wasn't the original purchaser and wasn't tech savvy enough to know about the SSD option.

yeah it *could* have been stolen just like many second hand purchaces!

let the boy enjoy it without having to wonder if its stolen -

eitherway its been improlperly listed (non tech savy thief or legit) and the buyer lucked out

Unless it's stolen from a shop/warehouse etc.

I worked with someone who knew someone who could get most easily carried items out of Argos. People do steal from retailers and distributors. Quite a lot of criminals are targeting freight now.

Its a credit crunch all across the world, and many good deals are out there.

I bought a brand new (all in box never opened) MBA Rev B 1.8/ssd for the same price as what a 1.6/hhd should cost.

yes there are shady deals going on in the world all the time, but it could also be something as simple as dodging paying tax (aka a worker has been paid in product for some work on the side ... as in europe taxes and employment insurance is really high)

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it.

I assume its the Rev A. If so congratz. You made a nice saving. If its a Rev B, then I would assume someone stole then in a box. Credit crunch or not, now one is loosing money by selling good so far under thier cost price.
