hey guys,

I purchased a used mac pro 1,1 last october and since have done the following updates. Installed a 3tb hard drive for time machine. A 2tb main drive for apps, final cut prox, lightroom5 and photoshop cs6. It came with 4 gigs of ram installed and recently added 8 gigs of ram to it for a total of 12GB. My next and probably last upgrade would be changing the video card from a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB to NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB for less than 200 bucks..

My question to you guys is this. Would the video card update make a big difference or am i better off saving my bucks and getting a newer mac pro that I can install the latest os on. I really do love my mac pro but I feel like it could be somewhat faster. Especially with all the video editing that i do...

The 8800 is a decent upgrade, but it's probably not going to still get you anywhere close to modern performance. It's going to feel faster, but I don't know if it will feel fast enough for you.

I'd be saving towards a new Mac Pro.

Get an SSD. If you are running Mavericks w. Tiamo boot, set it up with the 2TB drive as a Fusion drive. Makes a big difference in the experienced performance.

I have done what you did but also upgraded the CPUs to two quad cores for about $150 and installed an SSD boot drive for $125 . Best bang for the buck was the SSD.

For "final cut pro x and photoshop cs6," a GTX 970 or 980 (after better drivers are released) may be much better than the 8800 GT for CUDA/OpenCL/OpenGL acceleration [$329+ - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...049 600536050&IsNodeId=1&name=GeForce GTX 980 ], depending on which OSX version you intend to run.

hey guys thanks..

I was able to update my os to mavericks with purchase of a nvidia 8800GT video card.. so that was the last of my upgrades.. my machine now has 6tb of storage. 12 gigs of ram, and os mavericks on it.. No ssd on it. Now i have to figure out how to get a 24 led cinema display to work with this thing and i can use this workhorse to save up for a new mac pro or maybe even the newest... :)
