Great VoIP Application: siax

Hi,

if you are still waiting for are reason to jailbreak your iPhone - and Cycorder isn't enough - there is another one: siax

siax is rather new and a great little VoIP Application that let's you use your favourite provider(s) on WIFI and even 3G/EDGE.

It's available on cydia and sadly it costs money, 5 Dollars for the normal version and 9 for the pro version, which enables to use more than one SIP provider. Worth cheking out.

Currently there is a bug which disables the program on FW 2.2, but a bugfix should be out withing "10 hours" (quote from a support mail)

Does it work with Skype?

No, afaik skype is a very, very closed protocol and no other applications than the genuine skype applications directly communicate with skype. Fring uses a proxy in Israel and I think nimbuzz something in this area as well.
Skype is VoIP, but not SIP or IAX2, which other, real VoIP providers use.

Too bad. After trying many SIP providers, I find Skype the best balance for North America calling (quality/price wise).

Guess I'll stick to Nimbuzz.

Very nice. This is the first program I've found to work with my Asterisk pbx. A few bugs yet, but sound quality seems acceptable. Definitely a step in the right direction.

For me too. Great app. I am using the latest version 2.02 it has a SMS function. I use http://www.siax.org with the http://www.voipcheap.com make calls for less than 1 cent/minute and I can send a SMS for 3 cent. I do all my international calls with Siax. The config. is very easy.

Thanks for the info on siax. How do you think it compares with the other available clients (e.g., siphon on Cydia; iTalk and iSip in the App store) in terms of voice quality, reliability, etc.?

Installed it, set it up with Vonage, tried 1 call, it didn't work (big surprise), searched the Siax site for help, made some changes, went to try it again and Siax said my trial had expired. The Apple App Store isn't the only place that serves up POS apps. A trial period that allows 1 attempt to use the app.

Also noticed their site copyright date is still 2008 and there's no email address. Bogus.
