My MBP of 3.5 years died Thursday, so I had to make the quick decision on what computer to get next. I had been thinking iMac because of the extra power per dollar you get and since I don't need portables as much with my iPhone and lack of job functions needing one.

So far, I'm impressed. I went with the $1199 model out of the box at Best Buy. I didn't want to go through Apple because I would only get 12 months financing and need a new credit card. This way I also get Reward Zone points. Bonus!

Just got everything up and running from a Time Machine backup. I don't know what I think about the new wireless keyboard. I still have the larger wireless keyboards before Apple outlawed keys thicker than a quarter. But I'm giving this new one a go and at worse would use it some day when I get an iPad. It's a very weird transition, but I'm going to try. I now also have TWO magic mice, which is bad because I don't know where to use the extra one. My dad got one, and I don't really know anybody else who would use one. Part of me is thinking about selling it on eBay, but another part wants to wait until my company's big hardware upgrade to make sure we get magic mice.

I've been working on a MBP in clamshell mode with an external monitor most of the past 3.5 years, so any tidbits of info I can get? I can't wait to get more movies done faster in iMovie after the speed at which I ripped some movies using HandBrake.

Glad to be part of the club. Now someone just drop me $2,000 so I can join the iPad and MacBook Air clubs! :)

Wait. So MacBook Pro that costed $2000+ dies after 3.5 years of use? Thats terrible. This is why i don't understand Mac users. If Apple computers are better, than why do they have a short life span. If my MacBook Pro dies with in 3.5-4 years, I'm not going to stick with Apple. Premium tech should outlive the cheaper notebooks.

To be fair to it, I used the hell out of it. It was a notebook PC I used in clamshell most of the time, which means more heat generated. This was also the ONLY problem of significance I ever encountered. This crap happened all the time on numerous PCs.

Yeah, I sure as hell wish it had lasted longer. But when a video adapter goes bad, you can't do much to fix it. I could've had that done for $300, but I had been considering an iMac for a few months for my next computer.

I can also tell you I doubt I'll ever spend $1800 on a Mac again. I got that because of the huge difference between the MacBook and MacBook Pro line. Today, I would've gotten the $1199 MacBook Pro. Apple has done well reducing prices while not making crap computers. I just hope Lion isn't too expensive because I really really hoped to hold out until that for a free upgrade. Oh well.

Your video card went bad? Was it the nvidia? Because I thought there was a recall or an extended warranty on those?

Either way, the iMac is sweet.

Nope, it was an ATI 1600 from before that. I think the model with that GPU came out five weeks after I bought it. Both Macs I have owned were replaced by new models literally five weeks after I bought them. So if you're looking for a new iMac, you should expect a new one in early December.

Definitely very sweet so far. I'm even learning to not hate the keyboard. I don't understand why Apple couldn't make an attachment that would give you a full keyboard because sometimes I can really use the numeric keypad. Oh well.
