Does anyone have a Grey boot screen on a rmbp? I'm thinking those that had the beta b4 might have the black screen on theirs...... Os should it be black even if my rmbp never had the beta? Also is the boot up slightly slower?

ps it's a clean install

Do you have file vault turned on? If so, that is where the grey screen is coming from.

I take it that it is a subtle visual reminder to the user, that it has been turned on? I noticed it the first time I enabled FileVault.

No, but when filevault is enabled the bootup process is different. Rather than the OS doing the booting almost immediately after hardware initialisation, first you get an EFI booter that asks you for your password and sets up drive decryption, and only after that is done does the OS really start booting. Apparently that code doesn't take the colour of your computer into account.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

I left my computer at home but I doubt I enabled it unless it was on by default. I will check when I get home. I guess I should reinstall Yosemite?
