Grey screen, file folder and used DiskWarrior

Thanks for helping.

I got a iMac a little over a year ago. For some reason the hard drive crashed, I don't know why. I got DiskWarrior and was able to get data off the drive (Mac wouldn't start up, just got the grey screen).

Finally, I erased the hard drive and reinstalled OS X 10.5, but for some reason I still get the grey screen and after about 5 minutes of that get the flashing folder with a question mark. I tried resetting the PRAM and that didn't do anything. I run the disk checkes and permissions checks off the OS X disk and it says everything is valid. For some reason I think it just doesn't recognize the hard drive in the machine. In the Disk Utility it keeps coming up with the hard drive titled as "Untitled" or "disk0s12"

Anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?

Replace the hard drive. Don't take chances with it as it is either defective or about to fail completely. Is your iMac covered by applecare? If so, take it on in to Apple and let them replace the drive.

I was kind of hoping it would be something other than a failing hard drive. I'm not under applecare. If it was defective or about it fail, it seems like it wouldn't allow me erase the drive and then reinstall in OS back onto it. Thanks.

I understand what you mean about reinstalling, but keep in mind that not all drive failures are catastrophic- i.e. working one minute and not working at all the next minute.

Many more drive failures are progressive- where there is some failure that just slowly continues to get worse and worse until it ultimately totally fails, so I definitely agree with the fact that that drive exhibits that behavior and will not be one you should continue to count on.
