Does anyone know why random tracks are greyed out in Music? I was looking at one of their suggested playlists - so not just a song I randomly searched for and its not playable.

You would imagine if they are suggesting it, it should be available.

I also saw this happen with Biffy Clyro, if you go to their Only Revelations (Deluxe) album they have music videos at the bottom of the list, they are greyed out too.

I noticed this too. I added some albums to my library on my iPhone and when I check iTunes on my mac, they're there but they're greyed out and unplayable.

It must be the same as other music streaming services. For some reason the artist doesn't want them included. Happens a lot on compilations.

What's funny is the songs are available on other albums

go to Eminem and open up The Slim Shady LP. Guilty Conscience is not available there. But it's on Curtain Call Greatest Hits.

So he's fine with the MMLP 2 (his newest studio release) being completely intact but not the SSLP?

I also noticed that the greying out does not seem to follow any specific logic. "I Feel for You" from Chaka Khan's album "I Feel for You" is greyed out (yes, the title track of the album is the only one greyed out). But on the compilation "Epiphany", it is available (and I am sure that it is 100% the album version).

Both albums were released by Warner Bros., so this is not some weird rights issue.

That's because you turned on iCloud Music Library first on iOS before iTunes on a Mac. Doing it from iOS first doesn't upload anything, it just matches. Greyed out stuff in iTunes on you Mac means it needs to be uploaded from there so that other devices (aside from the iOS device you first used) can access them.

Here is a quote from the support page.

"*When you choose Merge, songs on your device that are in the Apple Music catalog become instantly available to access on your other devices. On iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, songs that we can’t match are shown on your other devices. But you won’t be able to play them on your other devices until you upload them from your Mac or PC with iTunes."

Thanks but I don't think that's the problem. The tracks in question are on the Apple Music library, so they shouldn't need to be uploaded.

It happened on Beats Music too, especially soundtracks. Probably something to do with licensing.

I understand some tracks might not be available, but why are these human curators including those tracks in playlists? I've had several For You playlists with greyed out songs. Makes no sense.

Because they have it in their library. That's what happens when you make a playlist and share it with friends and it includes tracks that they don't have.

You have to think that these human curators are just people making playlists, and a song that is greyed might be available to you because you have the song in your library. It's not an algorithm that's like

if song is available
and song is in genre X
and song is from artist Y
add

Why wouldn't they load up new AM account with no local files to make these lists? Then they would have to choose from what's available to everyone.

In some of the cases, the tracks were once available and the labels/artists have since removed them. For example, Prince recently pulled his tracks from all services except Tidal so all the playlists on Apple Music (which were created originally for Beats Music) that contain Prince songs now have them greyed out.

Okay, so last night I finally flipped the switch for iCloud Music Library in iTunes, and everything uploaded successfully. There were a few dupes, but for all intensive purposes, my entire iTunes library is now accessible from my iPhone, and iPad - which is great. In addition, the playlists that I had created from my iOS devices, and the playlists I had created in iTunes have all synced up properly.

However,
I'm currently sitting at a Starbucks listening to Beats 1 on my MacBook Air, and noticed that EVERY SINGLE album I added to My Music via Apple Music is greyed out. The ONLY songs that are currently available to play in iTunes are the very few albums which I actually have stored on my computer.

Whats odd, is if I fire up Music on my iPhone, any song, or album plays just fine - yet seemingly all of Apple Music songs are mysteriously greyed out in iTunes. I can confirm that the upload did finish last night, and when I Get Info in iTunes, they don't say waiting...any ideas?

Click the cloud icon with the lightning symbol in the upper right. Looks like there's some communication error with Apple's servers. Might be due to some sort of filtering on Starbuck's network.

I notice that all my AM is greyed out for a good 5 sec when I launch iTunes until it supposedly does a DRM check.

Wow...I didn't even notice that icon up there! Clicked it, and after a fed seconds, wallah! All items in iTunes immediately became available. Interesting.

Thanks!

When I signed up on the 2nd I had connectivity issues as well. Couldn't get the library to connect. Clicking the broken iCloud icon did nothing. Took 8 hours before it connected again. But since, no issues at all.

It is sad that many artists still limit us to listening the full Album such as Armin Van Buuren's label called Armada you can not listen to any mixes such a A State of Trance ones. Now why would I care about the separate tracks when I can find them on a EP or Single and when ASOT is all about the DJ Mix.

A lot of this Artists need to understand times are changing purchasing music has become the past just like Movies but both TV/Movie studios and Music Labels just can not understand all they worry is about $ sign. Another problem is MTV was the reason a lot of artists were doing good the network helped out for everyone to notice all types of genres of music. Now MTV is dead and Music Videos can be found on Vevo or YouTube and now Apple Music.

I still remember when MTV2 network was launched that was like the holy grail for music videos sadly it was during when you needed to have a satellite it was not launched when digital cable started.

Is anyone else seeing greyed out tracks on music they added to their library from Apple Music? This isn't an issue of DRM rights - I can stream the song no problem from Apple Music. But songs I added to my library are occasionally greyed out. And it's random. The greyed out tracks have changed over the past few days for no explainable reason.

I have the same thing happen to me, every now and again, a song from any one album is just greyed out and the only fix I can tell is to delete it from my library and add the entire album back. Viola - it's all back, but it's strange, I wonder if it's AM's sorting out of its licensing or just a bug to be sorted out.

I actually just saw this when I went to try and play a song from Elton John's last set on Beats 1

Really odd since I'm subscribed and I could hear all the songs just fine when the actual broadcast happened but now I can't go back and listen to a couple of them because they're greyed out
