When someone sends out a group chat with things they want you to know. How can you take yourself out of the chat so you're not dinged every few seconds? Mute doesn't do much.

There's an option to allow you to leave the chat. When you do, everyone knows, so it could be seen as being antisocial. I just "Mute" the conversation when it doesn't interest me. Personally I hate Group Chat. The bane of iMessage

Why doesn't muting/hiding alerts not do much?

I believe there’s an option to Hide Alerts on specific chat.

Hmm, usually if there’s a group that I want to leave, I’ll just say some parting words, or make up excuses like you’re resetting your phone, and then leave.
