Group notifications question- automatic, by app?!

Does it mean it will auto group after X amount of notifications come in from that one app? What's the difference between that and by app?? bit confused since every app has an option here.

From what I understand there's a subtle difference between "by app" and "automatic". "By App" means, that f. ex. every one of your WhatsApp message notification will go under one WhatsApp notification pile, while "Automatic" means that iOS can potentially differentiate messages from certain people, group chats etc. and make different notification piles for each of those, although technically they're all still WhatsApp notifications.

At least that's what it seems to be doing on my phone.

Got it, so itll combine same person texts as one bubble, but wont combine all the texts from various people into that same bubble.

That’s an example, and it’s down to each individual app how they manage automatic grouping. Some may not even make use of the property which groups them, meaning Automatic and By App do the same thing
