Anyone read John Gruber’s assertion that Americans are lucky not to have alternative app stores etc? Funny that he’s not calling for Apple to prevent self-installing of apps on the Mac. I honestly don’t understand Gruber, he will criticize Apple at times which makes me wonder if he’s simply not as smart as he thinks he is.

I stopped reading Daring Fireball when he stopped getting product leaks from Apple.

Reactions: arc of the universe
I think Gruber is pointing to the tradeoffs that the EU legislation brings.

In Europe, we tend to focus on the benefits of the DMA while ignoring the downsides, of which there are plenty.

For instance, when iOS 18 ships, the rest of the world get iPhone Mirroring and AI, while in the EU we get the ability to delete the messages app lol

The point is that there are good arguments to be made on both sides, and just because someone makes good arguments from a different view point does not make them a hack.
