with latest update - well enough.

its better to have 1gb card for gta4 anyway.

Still 135 euros extra though, on a machine that's already 1500 euros. Bad thing here: Calculated from dollars, it's around 1100-1200 euros for the machine (low end 27''), but still we got to pay much more (1500) :( Are we Europeans richer?:D

You would be able to run it, but only at abysmal resolutions (think 1280x1024 or lower) with most settings turned down. Its a demanding game for the GPU, so unless you're willing to compromise on visual quality, all you will have is a slide-show.

The 4850 itself can barely handle GTA 4 at 1920x1080 at decent settings. So, even if you did have that card, you'd have to be running it at 1080p for the greatest balance of visuals and fluidity.

alas, why not have the option of a better card in the imacs? I see no reason for it.

Probably. Now.

Yea the iMac 27" with whatever graphics card isn't going to run it well. I have a custom PC gaming rig that i built myself with a core i7 and radeon 4870 (512 mb) and it still has problems at times at 1920X1200. I just can't imagine the 4850 doing any better. If you are into gaming and stuff, macs are definitely not for you. Of course you can get another machine (mac pro or PC) and input into the 27" as a monitor. There's just no way a radeon 4850 (or 4670) going to ouput 2560X1440 GTA IV anywhere near 30 FPS.

And if you didn't know, GTA IV on the PC runs notoriously bad on even good hardware.

Here are some benchmarks of the 4850 running GTA IV at 1680X1050 (avg 33fps):

That is the test system they used.

It should run great, I run GTA 4 on medium settings, except for texture quality and view distance and the res is at 1024x400 on my iMac below. It has 2GB RAM btw. It averages 18-22 fps. Not the greatest thing to play on, but yeah. I would get the high-end 27 inch because you get the 4850 and the optional i7. If you have the bucks, just get it. My friend's MBP 13" runs GTA 4 about 24 fps at the same settings.

If you are into gaming and stuff, macs are definitely not for you.

Well, glad I'm not that into gaming then, guess I like macs :apple:

Like the GTA games though, thought it would be awesome to be able to play GTA 4 pretty nice.

But, what does ''smaller res.'' mean? Smaller screen (like 20'' with black around or whatever lol) or does the screen just look crap, the quality goes down?

Guess the last, just curious if that's still nice, acceptable and well playable..

You are certainly better off running that game off a console, PS3 or 360. It was first developed for the console and terribly ported over to the PC, it's a shame.

I'm not one to play games on my computers because I have a ton of game consoles to take care of that for me (all connected to a large HDTV as well), but even I see the need for Apple to have more powerful options for the video cards.

Smaller res means crappier quality. E.g. take a look at normal quality TV show and high definition TV show, there's the difference.

Get PS3 or X360 for games, that's what I do

I'm gonna buy the low-end 27" in early January. How well will it do GTA IV?

Why dont you just get a 27" imac and not shell out 100 or so euros for it, buy a proper games console like and XBox or PS3.

It will be better for you in the long run to spend a little bit more for a games console, rather than a great graphics card.

If you do decide to do this i recommend the XBox 360 Elite :D

With such a high res monitor it definitely is not built for games. But I would still say get the higher end iMac for the Quad Core CPU. It will last much longer and apps should start taking advantage of it. Unless something radically changes soon to allow clock speeds to start going up again.

No no no :p

PS3 for the win! Especially the Slim

Nope gaming computer is definitely the best.:D

Until XBOX, PS3 etc... Get the Rome, Medieval, Empire Total Wars Series and Age of Empires series and other such strategy games. Plus a proper keyboard and mouse for such games and first person shooters.

Though if the op just plays games like GTA or racing then a console is better.

I suppose it really comes down to the type of game a person plays as to which is better.

Yup, it depends on games you like. I have Mac which is capable of playing all games but I mainly use my PS3 because I like its easiness and simpleness. Actually I ordered Age of Empires 3 for Mac yesterday because I love that game series and it's not available on PS3.

Guess I'll just get the basic 27'' then. Don't need anything more at all, just this one because of the awesome screen..
