Got a chance to get a GTX 1050 real cheap for my MacPro 3,1 it seems Apple prefers AMD cards but I know there's video web drivers out there that I've heard of (I can't seem to find for the 10 series cards though?) I would be using the patcher to install Catalina (I'm assuming the GTX 1050 would support metal with the webdrivers?) Any help would be appreciated and experiences with this card in a MP Thanks! Also i'll and In I know I won't have a boot screen but doesn't bother me.

Only 900 series or older Nvidia cards are supported by Mac OS X. So you will only be able to use that card in Boot Camp with Windows.

Nvidia 9xx series are Maxwell GPUs, that stop working after 10.13.6. GTX 1050 is Pascal and only work up to 10.13.6.

Apple support only Kepler NVIDIA GPUs after High Sierra (Kepler GPUs are for example GTX 680/780).

Thanks did some research, and looks like I'm not looking good either way other than a GTX 680. How does the 1050 do on Hi Sierra? I've been reading about the NVIDIA web drivers and I've only seen them working on Sierra and I was only able to find the Nvidia web drivers for up to the to the 980's. I would be fine with staying on high Sierra if I could get the web drivers to work with it for the 1050. I did find an RX 560 locally but there's mixed reports of it working with a 3,1 due to CPU instruction set compatibility issues. Anybody running a 1050 on high Sierra? And if so possibly could you post the link to the webdrivers you used. I'm on a Mac pro 2,1 8 core right now with a 5870 it's reasonably fine but support for El Capitan is running thin, would probably be better off staying before Mojave as I'm assuming the version of Final Cut pro and other software I have will still run fine on HS.

NVIDIA web drivers support Maxwell and Pascal GPUs up to 10.13.6.

Anyway, it's a bad choice now, since High Sierra will have the support removed and be obsolete the day Big Sur is released. Apple will remove High Sierra support for FCPx, Adobe will do the same with it's products. Even if the 1050 is practically free, you have less than a month of High Sierra support.

You can run recent AMD cards on MP3,1 with MouSSE emulation, see the MouSSE thread to know what to do.

I think I'm just going to stay with my 2.1 8 core for now with El Capitan to there is absolutely no supported browsers, it has a 5870 and 16GB RAM and a 2TB SSD and a 6TB HDD honestly I have no complaints really other than lack of support, I make YouTube videos and use Final Cut pro I don't want to have to pay for a new version so I guess I'll just get my money's worth out of it then upgrade to a 5.1 or a trash can Macpro which honestly I don't like so probably a 5.1 a 580 and run big Sur when it comes out with dosdudes patch. Chrome is still supported in Firefox is on ESR I have a base model iMac i5 2014 and I find the Mac pro more responsive and nicer to use other than the iMac supports airplay I just mainly use it to casting Apple music to my Apple TV at this point.

I might get a GTX 680 and flash it for Mac and put it in the 2008 8 core mac, I don't want to have to pay for new version of Final Cut pro and I highly doubt Apple upgrades it for free for Catalina and beyond I know the version I have now does not run on Catalina already tried it on the iMac I'm assuming it will run on high Sierra so a 2008 with high Sierra would be a fairly good upgrade over a Macpro 2,1 with El Capitan. I'm guessing web browser support I'll get a few years out of high Sierra and I'll just use my iMac for up-to-date OS big Sur stuff as it's a 2014 and it supports it natively.
