i installed a 680 in the slot were the 5770 was and now my fans go crazy but when moved to the next x16 slot the fans act good is this normal?

Several people have reported this with aftermarket video cards. A few have reported this even with official Apple 5770 and 5870 video cards.

So far, the only solutions seem to be:
1) After bootup, run any program that works the card.
2) Cold boot into Windows, then reboot into OS X.
3) Use slot 2 as you've done.

I wonder if we could figure out which machines/boot roms are affected?

I DID notice that hardware monitor app (Pro version, or whatever, the one you pay for) has a "GPU %" entry near bottom of screen that appears on 4,1/5,1 but does not on a 3,1. So AGPM would have different info to decide on fan speeds.
