GTX 980 or Titan Black

Hi all,

I have a chance to get a decent deal on a Titan Black card, but I was wondering:

Would I be better off with a GTX 980 for compute work (CUDA/OpenCL)? It seems like the benchmarks I am seeing are showing that the GTX 980 might be a better performer...

What do you guys think?

Go Maxwell, not Kepler. (980, not Titan)

Maxwell has lower power consumption for better performance, and has some great new features for GPGPU computing. When software is updated to exploit the new features, you'll be sorry if you have the old Kepler (Titan).

It depends on how soon you need to make a decision. So far the benchmarks seem inconclusive to me as nobody (except MacVidCards and Netkas) have gotten the 980 to perform at PCIe 2.0 speeds within OSX. If they can unlock this capability (and it's probably more of a when than an if) and if early-adopter reports are positive then I'd go with the 980 for performance and power supply reasons. But if you need high end performance without any potential new-tech difficulties then I'd go with the Titan Black. Just my 2 cents.

It also depends on what apps you're planning to use. While OpenCL performance in Maxwell has seen a nice increase, CUDA performance in some apps have seen a drop. Octane Render, for instance, would currently render much faster with a Titan Black (besides having more VRAM, if you need it).
