Hi all,

Has anyone upgraded from a 980 to a rx 580 8gb on their 5,1?

Am wondering if this "upgrade" is worth the extra $300 or if it is more of a side-grade.

If you do a lot of video editing in Final Cut, than yes it is worth it. It all depends on what you do. If you just browse, general use etc, the 980 may be fine. Again though, it all depends on what you do.

With 2 4k monitors, my VRAM is constantly filled (4gb on the 980) and it causes stuttering especially in mission control. Will 8gb of VRAM on the 580 help with this?

More VRAM of course better than less. But 4GB should be more than enough to just drive the OS UI (even with 2x 4K Display).

I doubt if the lag is because of poor coding from Apple. The problem may be because of METAL 2, may be because of windowsever, or even iconservice, it seems High Sierra still quite buggy at this moment. Especially lots of issue on HiDPI or APFS these kind of fundamental but critical component.
