gtx670 along with 5770

Hey everyone. Quick question. I'm thinking about buying a gtx 670 in the next month or so. I would like to keep my stock 5770 in my machine to run my second monitor. I know that the gtx takes two 6pin powers and the 5770 1.

A 5770 can pull 110W(9A) (more or less) at full load and the 670 pulls about 150 I think. I know thats under the total 300 that the board can handle.

What are your thoughts on this? Should I buy gt120 and call it a day or do I have a chance at running the setup above?

Why not just run both monitors from the GTX 670? You can keep the 5770 in case you ever need a boot screen, but there's no good reason you need multiple cards to drive 2 monitors.

I would need an expensive converter to run the other monitor. I have 24" and 27 ACD... unless anyone has another solution..

In your situation, I'd probably buy a GT 120. It doesn't require auxiliary power and it would give that second MDP you need. (if I'm reading correctly, both your displays are ACDs, right?)

Assuming you have a full Display Port plug on the GTX 670 and you need a mini-DP for your Apple Cinema Display, all you need is something like this:

I just Googled for "display port to mini display port adapter" and found one for $7.

For what its worth from a PSU point of view I use an overclocked PC 5870 (6 pin + 8 pin) with the Apple 5770 (6 pin).

The 5870 does virtually nothing on the OSX side although if I connected a DVI to it I would get a second screen.

The 5770 does virtually nothing in the Windows side. I tax the 5870 regularly playing Crysis for almost 2.5 years with no problems.

The two 6 pin connectors come from the motherboard but the 8 pin one comes from the spare lead in the 5.25 bay using a Y splitters. As a result there are wires hanging out the side of my Mac Pro.

I would not recommend splitting the two 6 pin connectors on the motherboard, there's a risk you could draw too much current through them.

I'm confused. Are you suggesting a $7 adapter is too expensive? This really seems like the simplest solution, i.e. running just the GTX 670 with 2 6-pin power cables driving both your monitors. No external power supply needed, no power cable splitter (which would probably be roughly $7 as well).

I think the OP is actually referring to the fact that the reference GTX 670 cards only have ONE DisplayPort (and he needs two). The $7 adapter would be fine to convert the card's full-sized DP connector to MDP. But to get his second ACD running on the same card, he would have to buy an active adapter like this one to convert the DVI port to MDP.

Ahh yes, I mistook the HDMI port as a 2nd DP port, my bad.
