Hey, I’m new here. I thought I’d register because I’m stuck with this windows 10 install. I’m trying to install windows 10 on my Mac Pro 5,1 with GeForce gtx 680 card. During install it, I think it goes to 100% then says it needs to restart to continue. When it restarts it hangs on a black screen where only my mouse is visible. Any ideas ?

The only thing plugged into my Mac Pro is the target install drive, dvd of windows, my mouse and my keyboard. I’m not using boot camp. During install I chose windows pro, forgoing the “N” option.

Ok in Video I can not see if You used Bootcamp-Assistent of last supported MacOS
Maybe You started in UEFI-mode without legacy GPT-MBR-Bios Mode.
Your Mac Pro needs legacy MBR stuff or you get in some cases into trouble with Video Cards or
HDD Bootsector

I have EVGA 680 MacEd and PC Quadro k5000 and 1050Ti in 5.1
I always use Bootcamp assistant to install Win7
then I use Winclone after install of Win 7 and make clean install of W10 it works.

when your computer boots windows DVD/USB-Medium is there a command line on black screen you can choose legacy or UEFI install at the beginning? (maybe You need tool if not used Bootcamp-assistent.)

I always install legacy on Mac Pros 3,1/5,1
Your Install Partition Should be GPT with MBR-compatibility Entry. Winclone has tools for that.
Bootcamp-Assistent creates GPT-Partition with MasterBootRecord and formats Fat32 Partition,
which you later should reformat in Windows-Setup-Diskpart from BOOTCAMP/fat32 to NTFS

do not try to install windows 10 to external USB ....

forgoing the “N” option.
Is N version without MediaPlayer ? and You do not have N version cfg files on your medium ?

Yes I just clicked the regular windows 10 pro installer, not the 10 pro N

How do I know if I started in EFI mode. I most certainly did see the EFI boot dvd, but I didn’t click that. I clicked on the windows install. Same thing with windows 8 and it worked. 10 did not work. Anyway I didn’t know about Windows 7, now I’m in 8.1 Pro. Is that bad? I can’t get any internet even though I installed bootcamp 5.1 drivers. Any ideas? I also think without an activation key windows 8 has some restrictions. It’s not letting me open windows 10 install directly. It’s giving me a run time error that terminated the process in an “unusual way.” Some sort of host error

Oh yea I’m installing with a dvd on a separate drive. No partition without bootcamp assistant

I’m positive I’m not in EFI mode

I had to format to NTFS at install screen

OK If you ever had a Win8,1 copy working on MacPro you could easy update to win10
again, I hope you're not in UEFI boot mode ...

Mac Pro has UEFI 1.0

MS Windows 8 and 10 have different UEFI 1.0 and 2.0 support.

For your Mac Pro You need legacy-BIOS mode ...
Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode

some Windows ISO Files have UEFI ONLY Files....
There are bigger ISO Files with both versions.

you need to select "BIOS (CSM) mode
separate Drive I hope you mean internal Drive Bay , because extUSB-WiN-Install is very complicated...

Ive read that, but I still don't understand how to check if I am in UEFI boot mode or not. Theres not a place to go and turn it off or on? "after windows is installed" from the article. Ultra confusing

i guess ill run this

reg query HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control /v PEFirmwareType

in command prompt and see...

If im finding out AFTER i install windows, how would this have helped my windows 10 install if that couldn't get into windows to begin with

you need the right Install DVD/USB ISO/ESD Files...

if You use RUFUS to create media

TARGET SYSTEM MUST BE LEGACY CSM
[automerge]1579231735[/automerge]
Why doesn't Rufus create a Windows installation USB that can be booted in dual BIOS/UEFI mode?
If you are using a Windows ISO that can be dual booted in UEFI or BIOS mode, you may find that the USB created by Rufus does not preserve the dual UEFI+BIOS boot feature.

Especially, the Windows 8 or later installation ISOs, that support both UEFI and BIOS boot, will be converted to either one or the other mode, depending on the option you selected under Partition scheme and Target type: If you select MBR and BIOS or UEFI-CSM, the USB will be bootable in BIOS-mode only (even on UEFI systems), and if you select GPT then the USB will be bootable in UEFI mode only (and not bootable on a BIOS system at all).

This is done to avoid confusion, as it can be difficult for non-expert users to know whether they actually booted in UEFI or BIOS mode when a USB Flash Drive can be booted in both modes, and installation is meant to be a one-off operation, targeting a very specific machine and boot mode. You probably don't want to go through a full Windows installation, only to realize that it was installed in BIOS mode when all you really wanted was UEFI mode.

By ensuring that only one or the other can be used for Windows installation, there is no room for error with regards to which mode was used.

Note that this does not apply for Windows To Go and that you can also enable dual UEFI+BIOS boot by using the Alt-E cheat mode (see below) with Rufus 2.0 or higher. Also, if your UEFI firmware integrates an NTFS driver natively, then you may also find that you can dual boot a USB created in Rufus, even if only BIOS-CSM was specified.

I dont know what CSM stands for, be patient with my ignorance.

I downloaded Windows 10 Iso from windows website. Are you saying not to do that? and go to the other website and get a specific version??? (please be a little bit more specific).
I burned ISO on to a dvd using right click, burn iso.
My target DRive which is a spinning drive connected via SATA was formatted in MOJAVE disk utility to MS-DOS FAT32, Master Boot Record. I then shut down my mac. Removed the drive MacOS is on. Then I booted into the dvd. Upon install. It said "windows cannot install to this partition" I clicked format (which Im guessing made it NTFS), then it began the install motions. when installed said it needed to restart, it did so, but went to a black screen after restarting and booting.

I did the same in 8, but it did not go into a black screen.

this is from another user

"I've managed to install windows 7 and 8,1 on my mac pro using only a gtx 970 Non-EFI.

If you try to install windows with bootcamp assistant or via usb or by using your gt120 and then switching to your gtx 970 it will not work. (EFI Mode = black screen with blinking cursor with PC gtx970)

You need to use a DVD and a secondary drive to install windows to.
Remove your OS X drive from your mac pro before installing.

Just reboot with a windows dvd in superdrive.
This will enable installation in "CSM mode"."

Why do you remove Drives?
Which drives ?
Mac Pro has four Bays.
Internal drives stay all in computer no need to attach or remove sth during installation

You create media usuallylly from iso to usb with Bios-Legacy/CSM option. (menu in usb-creation tool)
You usually burn iso hybrid UEFI/BIOS to DoubleLayer DVD 7,5GB.(no need to choose both dir are on Dsk)

During boot process from DVD there is option to choose at early beginning legacy or UEFI in Win10
On USB with CSM selected during creation you only will boot in Legacy...
-------without EFI-VIDEO-MAC-CARD YOU WILL NOT SEE ANY MENU ------

after that
you should have GUID GPT formatted Drive NOT MASTER BOOT RECORD
TURN YOUR MASTER BOOT RECORD TO GPT utility above !!!
without hybridrid Bootsector ... NO APPLE TOOL will change boot partitions !!!

either tool in windows or control panel in Mac !!!

[automerge]1579236482[/automerge]

as far as I got it you do not have any original Mac graphics card...
In this case you will not see any menu during boot from DVD...

I would install with any Efi-Mac video card Windows and Bootcamp control panel then switch to PC GTX680.

there is special thread about bootcamp with non Eficards ..

https://www.reddit.com/r/bootcamp/comments/3c1fhf

I have hybrid GPT here is a tool for that:

I have a boot screen. My card seemed to have been flashed. I can switch between Mac and Windows 8 by pressing Alt.

I did not choose the EFI option. I pressed alt, and options came up and I chose the one on the dvd that was not EFI

I removed all the other drives because I didnt want to accidentally delete anything

Because I didn’t want to accidentally delete my MacOS start up. Better safe

It asked me to format it again. Maybe it changed it

I have a evga gtx GeForce 680 4gb

Not trying to be rude and I appreciate your help but a lot of what you’re saying is being contradicted. Gpt is associated with UEFI I’m reading... I thought you said not to boot EFI. I think if you were a little more specific, and clear maybe it would make sense. I also saw when I researched that usb booting is not compatible with Mac Pro 5,1 for bios. The link you showed me, I ran the query and came up with an error.

The link you sent me is about installing windows on a partition with macOS. Im installing on a whole other drive. Windows alone. Also EFI will not install on a MBR, it needs GPT just like the link you sent says. "I hope you didnt boot with EFI" - you.

  • 2012 and older models only support legacy BIOS Mode. There is varying degree of 'EFI'ness in these, but they are not UEFI-compliant.
  • Late 2013-2014 models support both EFI and BIOS, and default is BIOS. These are the first models which are UEFI.
  • 2015 and later models only support EFI and UEFI-compliant.

apple support forum:

Tower MacPros (2012 and older) are different animals, because a disk can be moved into any of the four bays and used. You can

  • either use a single disk any where which will be partitioned for macOS and Windows, no other disks must be present during the Windows installation, but can be added after Windows is fully installed, or,
  • two-disk configuration, in which the designated Windows disk must be formatted as a MBR/FAT (converted to MBR/NTFS) during installation. This also restricts such Windows disks to 2TiB or smaller.

do not try to install windows 10 to external USB ....

I've read your post and hope you could help me with my problem.

I need to install Mojave and Windows on the same SSD. So far so good, Windows installation was working, BUT after the installation of the NVIDIA driver for the GTX 680 I've got a black screen starting with login screen.
  • What do you mean with "GPT-MBR-Bios Mode"? Where can I see if it is correct at my Mac?
  • How can I create a GPT for Mojave (APFS) and MBR for Windows (NTFS) on the same disk?
Bootcamp doesn't work because of the SSD, it's recognized as external device. So I need to fix it manually...

Hope you can help me?!!

You have to start with a version of windows 10 from 2016 and then install the drivers

Does anyone know if gtx 680 working in EFI mode on windows 10?
