Hey,

As the title states,

I live in australia and was lucky to get given a 2012 Mac Pro 8core.

I want to get dual cpu tray for it where would i find such a thing or look for?

whats it called?.

what do i need to do?.

Would this with the single quad core be better then the 3,1 dual quads at 3.00Ghz the 5,1 is a
2.8 quad.

thanks.

Hello,

Assuming your Mac Pro is a single CPU system (why talk about 8 core when describing it?), you'd need the CPU tray. Not easy to come by and *very* expensive. Since you got the Mac Pro for free, look it up on ebay and such other sites. As far as I know, it's all you need.

Yep, you just need the tray. However as other's will point out that might be more expensive than you think. It might end up to be less expensive to sell the 2012 Single and get a 2010+ Duel.

I'm not completely sure I understand what you have. It sounds like you got a 2012 Mac pro WITHOUT the processor tray? If this is the case, and you are not entirely sure you need the dual processor, I would recommend a single processor tray with a high-end chip (W3680 or W3690).

I think you need something like this:

PLUS a processor, and if you don't have it, RAM as well.

Another one that will probably work, and should go for a bit less money is:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2009-2010-2...0969647?pt=Apple_Desktops&hash=item3f433c5f2f

I know this isn't exactly the question you asked, but I just thought I'd throw that out there, not entirely understanding the real question.

8 cores, or 4 cores (8 thread)?

If you already have a 8 cores 2012 Mac Pro, that processor tray is a dual CPU tray. You only need to upgrade the CPU if you want more performance.

If it's a Quad, get a dual 2010 model and sell your current machine may be a cheaper option. (Of course you can only get the tray from that 2010 Mac Pro, put your 2012 tray in and then sell it)

If you only want the tray. There are some online shop selling the classic Mac Pro components. However, it's very expensive. Not an ideal option.

For ebay, be very careful, you may end up only have the tray, but no heatsinks etc.

Just upgrade the CPU to a six core w5690. Replacing the tray to a dual CPU tray will cost a lot but if you are interested there are some dual trays available on EBay with X5690 processors already installed.
