Hey dear MacRumorists
I installed the HAB HighP RocketU 1144D into my MacPro 5.1 and it gets recognized by the mac without problems. But it's not working at USB 3.0 speed but rather at the speed of USB 2.0

I used the blackmagic disk speed programm to test it. Also with regular tests with normal files that I transfered from the LaCie external harddrive to my internal harddisk the port seems to be two times faster, but never at the speed that I was looking for or was advertised.

Further Informations:
Mojave 10.14.6 (18G95)
Mac Pro Server (Mid 2010)
2 x 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
96 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680

While I was searching I have not found anyone with a similar problem. Could someone please enlighten me?
 
Looks like it is working to me. USB 2 disk transfer speeds top out around 35MB/s. You're getting over twice that and are probably limited by the speed of the LaCie disk itself, rather than the interface.

Thank you for your reply. That is reassuring. But the LaCie itself is a USB 3.0 disk itself, so I was thinking, that it would not bottleneck the capabilities of the port o_O But yeah, maybe I should be satisfied with the increased speed...
 
if you want super fast you need to get an external SSD or NVME drive, spining HD's will be around 60-180mb/sec depending on drive.
also how full the drive is will change it's speed.

Ok, but bear with me. I've tested the same external Harddrive on my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 also on USB 3.0
Is it not weird, that the numbers are so different?

Something is very wrong here. You should not have a disk that is giving half a gigabyte per second in read speeds but only 35MB/s writes. The Mac Pro numbers look much more consistent w/ a USB hard drive. This MacBook Pro graph looks...inaccurate. Make sure you're using a large test file size for this. Also, it might help for us to know the model/capacity/free space of the LaCie drive.

Yes, the drive *enclosure* is USB3.0, and USB3.0 links at 5Gbps (or around 500MB/s for large transfers), but that does not mean the drive is capable of saturating that link. As @orph said, a mechanical drive these days can be expected to sustain somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-180MB/s when empty, so USB3 does not pose a bottleneck for a single hard drive. But USB2 @ 480Mbps (practically more like 35MB/s or 280Mbps) does pose a bottleneck for the drive.

Just remember that putting a given drive that's saturating its bus on a faster bus doesn't necessarily mean it will saturate that faster bus too...

Only a RAID0 enclosure of two fast/perhaps three HDDs will get ~500MB/s read throughput via a USB3.0 connection, so this result is wrong.

Your result is a little better than the usual mid-range SATA SSD connected via USB3.0.
 
You are right guys. It was a weird hiccup of the disk speed test. I've tested it again this morning and the numbers look normal this time on the MacBook Pro.
