hacked iphone on at&t

Hey guys,

Firstly, let me say, Ive been around the hacking community for a bit. Ive been paying attention to all of this and have hacked my ipod touch from day one manually. However, I have never owned an iphone. In my office today someone sold me an old iphone for $100 bucks, which is a great deal. I figured id just use it as a normal phone since its an upgrade.

I honestly cant afford the data plan right now, but for $100 bucks its not a big deal. My question is, without the data plan and on AT&T, what are my options? Do I need to jailbreak it before I start to use it?

Again, ive only paid attention to hacks on the ipod touch. Im sorry if this has been covered. I did search, but this is a somewhat specific question.

(yes, i realize the ludicriousy of having an iphone w/o a dataplan... Im not getting it to look cool, i swear.)

Yeah, I think you are going to need to jailbreak and unlock it to use your SIM in it. And for 100 bucks, I don't blame you for going this route. Hell of a deal in my opinion. I'd normally laugh at anyone who wanted an iPhone with no data plan, but in your case, I'm on board with no problems. I can't believe someone let that phone go for so cheap. Must be clueless, but lucky you!

Anyway, jailbreak it, unlock it, and throw your sim in. The only thing I'm not sure about is if the thing will still actively use an EDGE connection without signing up for a data plan. I know in the old days, if you didn't have a plan, they'd charge you per kb. You don't want that for sure. So check it to make sure it doesn't work on EDGE, and if it does, call AT&T to see if they can turn it off all together. No need to tell them you are using an iPhone in my opinion, just tell them to block EDGE usage. I know that on Tmobile, the iPhone would give an error saying no internet when trying to use EDGE without a data plan. But I'm not sure AT&T works the same way, based on past experiences with old phones.

yeah, ive been using it all day and it doesnt seem to be connecting
ive been watching my at&t account to see if any data has been flowing, but none so far. I also changed my connection settings to a fake EDGE network address, so there is no chance that it could connect even if it wanted to.

as far as the deal i got, im tempted to put it up on ebay and profit a good $150 bucks, but as far as that goes, im the kinda guy who hates using a cell phone because i find it incredibly tedious to put all my contacts in it, etc etc. I have a feeling this phone will fix that problem. Its in great shape too.

One thing i didnt mention was that I live overseas but am in america right now. I can use a china mobile sim with this jailbroken iphone, its a nice plus.
