Hacked iPhone questions I can't find answers to...

Hi guys,

Please forgive my naivety... I've searched the forums, it just gets overwhelming.

So I just bought my first iPhone, and unlock and jailbroke it to work with TMobile. The process, using Pwnage was relatively easy.

Here are a few questions:
1. When I jailbroke and unlocked, it took me to version 2.0. When I connect to iTunes, it's suggesting that I upgrade to 2.0.2. If I do that, will it brick my phone? Do I upgrade through iTunes, or do I need to use a program like Pwnage? What is the best way to always keep the latest version?

2. The Email seems horribly slow and a bit buggy. Is it just me? Coming from a blackberry, it seems slow and horribly behind.

3. I feel like my TMobile signal strength is a bit poor. Is there anything that can be done about that? Will any update/upgrade help it?

4. What is Cydia, and why does it freeze my iPhone every time I use it?

1. how did you jailbreak and UNLOCK your iPhone? Are you using an iPhone 3G... because a jailbreak AND UNLOCK is not possible (yet) on this. are you sure you didnt just jailbreak it?

2. yes, email is horrible on the iPhone if you are coming from a Blackberry. Apple have a LONG way to go before they produce anything remotely as good as Blackberry's email system. (yes I am an Apple Fanboy, but a realistic one!)

3. on T-Mobile are you on Edge or 3G?? (are you in the USA?). 3G currently has very poor connectivity around the world, it's something Apple are addressing. (if you turn 3G off, you'll probably see full signal strength at EDGE... annoying I know!)

4. Cydia is like 'Installer', its the hackers version of the App Store, except you can do lots more cool things with it to hack your iPhone even more.

You can update to 2.0.2 with iTunes, and your phone will work fine and still be unlocked, but it will not be jailbroken anymore. You can re jailbreak with quickpwn if you want, or run Pwnage again and restore your phone.

Cydia is a little buggy still, but if you update to 2.0.2 and jailbreak again, and then install all the Cydia updates, it works pretty well.

Thank you. My main concern was that I could upgrade through iTunes, and not relock the phone. I honestly could care less about the jailbreak features.

I have yet to install any apps that work on a jailbroken phone. If I do, then uprade through iTunes, which unjailbreaks it, will those apps not work? Would I need to quickpwn it?

And to the first poster, I have a first generation, 8 GB, iPhone. I unlocked it through pwnage and used the expert mode. I found a GREAT video walk through on youtube.

I'm in your situation--1st-gen 8G iPhone, unlocked/jailbroken with Pwnage in 2.0, TMobile user.

I updated the phone to 2.02 in iTunes, and the first time I did so, it locked up the phone. So I pwned it again, and updated it again. Second time worked perfectly--I have an iPhone that works on TMobile, but is otherwise proper Apple spec. That's what I wanted, so I'm delighted. If I ever discover an app for jailbroken phones that I feel I really need, I'll re-jailbreak.

Your reception issues will not change with updates, I'm afraid.

And, coming from a TMobile Sidekick, the email seems miraculously fast and stable to me. I guess it depends on what you're used to.
