Hacked! Will Time Machine Restore the Hack?

Hi!

My computer was recently used by a stranger (creepy) and I think he may have done something to it. He looked at my pictures and I think he may be tracking or took my saved settings for pass codes etc.

If I wipe out my computer and reinstall Snow Leopard then restore the data from time machine will it still have whatever bug he put in it?

if you restore from the date BEFORE the incident, NO

Yeah I doubt it.

Unless you had ssh on. and the port was unblocked on the time machine router. (If that is what you had)

There was no one in your computer. Change you passwords and your fine.


You'r panicing and its not a big deal. If you post pictures to the internet "strange" people still see them.

this doesn't add up to plausible, however, restore to an earlier time, change all passwords everywhere.

A couple of clarifying questions for you:

1. How do you know someone was using your computer? Did they physically touch it? Did they use VNC/Screen Sharing and you could see what was happening? How do you know they were looking at your pictures?

2. How do you know he put a "bug" on it? Does your computer have symptoms of a trojan horse? Did he put anything in your Startup Items?

From the wording you're using, I'm not convinced that you didn't do something bad to your own computer and are asking for help restoring it. If so, just ask! I won't judge you -- if you unwittingly put a trojan on your computer, I will try and help you.
