Yes I know this has been asked a hundred times over but I need help. My son had on his Discord account a message posted under his name. It was in a group. It said "You have been hacked, he was being watched and they saw everything he does." He believes we did it as a joke. We being his parents. Well we were not home. And he was at work with only his phone. He only has a iPhone 13 ProMax, and a iPad Pro. The message was left at 4:53 pm yesterday. I told him Discord is easily hacked after researching it. Something about his Account Coin being captured. Well his iPad shows 17 mins of activity. His App Store, Settings, Mail, Discord, and 2 other apps all had 1 min of activity logged between 4-5 pm. Discord shows 11 mins. Even tho we showed him we were not home with proof he is mad and says it had to be us. Does it sound like he was hacked? If so how? The one thing is he is refusing to show us the group, and has as of late been very protective of his phone. He is 18. Lastly our firewall blocks stuff all the time that he is trying to view. Sites of questionable nature. Any help would be great.

That sounds very like an email scam that has progressed to other platforms. I have a spam service on one of my client accounts, I see this message all the time, I have gotten it too. I have ignored it for months, no problem.
"Do not worry about this email. Neither hackers nor cyber criminals have infiltrated/hacked your computer and there is no video of you watching pornography. Simply ignore the message and do not send any Bitcoins. Your email, name, and password was probably stolen from a compromised website such as Yahoo (these website breaches are common). If you are concerned, you can check if your accounts have been compromised by visiting the haveibeenpwned website."

Just a meaningless scam. As long as he hasn't handed over his login info (i.e. logging into suspicious websites disguised as Discord) then he's probably fine.

People get messages like this all the time on Discord, especially if in very large public chatrooms, and unfortunately that means accounts do get compromised. Fortunately there isn't much to worry about if you're not clicking on bad links or anything. Usually compromised accounts go on to post spam in chatroom sub-channels, and if he only just got these messages, I doubt his account's been compromised yet.

There is a slight misunderstanding in what I posted. Someone used his account to post a message in a discord group a message saying " You have been hacked. HEHE We see all you do. You are being watched." It was not message sent to him.

Malware-makers can simply look for other weaknesses in widely used apps, which inevitably include flaws from time to time due to their complexity.

They could, but it seems way easier to just phish for their info, judging by how often these things happen even in smaller public servers I'm on.

Firstly, your sons account … is it listed exactly the same as on the discord posting? No a space before the name or underscore etc?

How complex is his credentials for discord and has he changed them already to something very complex?!

Seems more like a social engineering action than a scam. Whomever mimicked or impersonated your sons discord account posted what they did to evoke thoughts or actions of others.

Hoping you get to the source and root cause of this.
