Hacking the iPhone

So I'm a regular iPhone user but am very interested in hacking it to add applications, namely the NES emulator. I have no programming experience, but I am very good with computers and I'm sure I could learn very fast. Here are my questions if some of you out there can help a novice out:

What are the potential damages it could do to the phone?

Is it worth it for me to do it now when the emulator is still kind of new? Should I wait for it to come out officially / will it come out officially?

Are there any very detailed guides out there as to how I can do it? I've seen some listings of how to do it but they all seem pretty complex..

OK, if you guys can help me out it would be incredibly appreciated. If any of you have a couple spare moments and would be interested in walking me through it via AIM I could then write up a newbie guide and post it because I think there are a lot of others like me that are interested in doing this.. my AIM name is DavidK022.

No to detract from this awesome forum, but modmyiphone.com has great user guides and forums for this very purpose. Check them out.

Right now, adding applications could be considered complex, using command-line based tools to hack into then iphone, and manipulate from there.

Another option, for Intel-based Mac users anyway, is iFuntastic which is a GUI for doing the same thing, well almost. iFuntastic is great for manipulating sounds, images, icon arrangement and even text that is on the iPhone.. but, you can't add files (and therefore install an application) to the iPhone yet. I say yet because the new version, which is do any day now, is rumored to take the next level and provide this (and other) functionality. Using iFuntastic, I have managed to make my iPhone completely unique, from the icons on the Home Page to the custom ringtones and event notification sounds (like for new mail, etc.)

Personally, I am right there with you in wanting to add some new applications, etc. to my iPhone. But, alas, even though I am an original hacker and programmer of multiple decades, I am too old and lazy to use anything other than a GUI these days. At least, as it relates to jacking with my iPhone.
