Hackintosh: Will I be able to run OS X

Hi there I'm Imogen and I'm starting on my first build. Life long Mac user I have decided to try my hand out at a hackintosh using the kakewalk method.

This is what I shall be using


Case - Antec Dark Fleet DF-85
PSU - Antec TruePower Quattro 1200 Watt
CPU - Intel Core i7 950
MOBO - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3
RAM - Corsair Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz
GPU - PowerColor HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 Need a replacement
SSD - Crucial 64GB Real SSD C300 2.5" (For the OS)
HDD - Western Digital WD1001FALS 1TB HD SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache x 2
DVD - LiteOn IHAS124-19 24x DVD/RW (Plan on getting blue-ray drive in future)

Don't know if I missed anything out, but could you be so kind as too tell me what you think of this setup and if i'll run into any problems trying to run kakewalk or OS X SL.

The motherboard will work but currently, AMD 6000-series GPUs are not supported AFAIK. AMD 5870 for example should work okay though.

You are better off asking Hackintosh help from sites such as InsanelyMac and TonyMacx86, which specialize in running OS X in a regular PC.

I'd also recommend tonymacx86. Tony and the folks there have made it so simple and easy to put together a hackintosh. It's a fun project, enjoy!

Hellhammer! You are my saviour I was able to cancel my GPU order. Thanks everyone for suggesting the other forums I'll try there too.

I got the XFX|HD-577A-ZNFC HD5770 RT and I am extremely happy with it. And it's not that expensive, around $140. I can even use the 27" ACD with a DP to mDP adapter. I recommend it, hands down.

Back to the drawing board in search of a graphics card.

Here are some graphics cards that work with TonyMacx86's methods. ATI 5870 performs nearly the same as AMD 6950 (link) so it's not a bad choice.

Yes, you cannot legally run OSX on your computer.

That is true in the US but Apple's EULA is not effective in Europe for instance.

But has no legal status in here. There are several companies that have been selling Hackintoshes for years and Apple hasn't been able to do anything for them, even though they have tried.

Anyway, this probably isn't something OP cares about. I know you have to comment to every Hackintosh tread they they are illegal or bash them by some other way.

I don't care about the user contract anymore, I'm using an imac right now and I have a mac mini and macbook pro. I've used apple machines since I was 4 years old.

I like apple and all that but I'm not going to fork over two or three times the price AGAIN to get an unupgradable machine that lags behind PCs of the same price range.

Oh and I stay in the EU I already had this argument with someone at my university the US lets companies walk all over the consumer via the EU!

Apple did sue a company can't remember the name and they have now gone bankrupt but they were selling apples products on cheaper hardware. I can see why they'd stop that cutting into their profits.

But as far as you buying Mac OS X and installing it on a PC they can't really do anything about it. I don't think they can even tell as they now run basically the same hardware apple just inflate the price as they are like the "designer label" of home PCs.

You sell your Mac when upgrading, that's how to keep it manageable

Psystar went to bankrupt but they were based in the US where Apple's EULA is effective. E.g. PearC which is based in Germany has been selling Hacks for several years now since Apple's EULA is not effective due to German laws (same thing in most European countries).
