iPhone Hacktivation Help 3G DFU Mode Failed

Hi everybody, a friend recently game me his iphone 3G to fix his no sim card problem, as he just wants to use it as an ipod. I've tried multiple hacktivation methods (redsn0w, restoring the firmware etc.) Whenever it gets to the step of getting into DFU mode, it always fails. iTunes doesn't recognize the iPhone either with just a message saying that there's no sim card bla bla bla. If anyone can help, that'd be great.

firmware? baseband? have you tried Iclarified? why did your friend decide to ask you? do you have acces to the carrier sim it doesn't have to be working.
