Ever since I heard about the crossgrade offers for the universal binary version of Final Cut Studio, I was tempted to find a copy of one of the components so I could upgrade for $199. I found a copy for Motion 2 academic (which qualifies) for $150 on ebay and was tempted to pull the trigger. It would have effectively costed me $380 for the Univeral verision of Final Cut Studio ($150 + $10 shipping + $199 + tax for crossgrade). I passed and coincidentily within and hour, someone else bought Motion2.
If I were into video editing, I think there wouldn't have no chance I would have passed on this great deal, but I'm not. The side of me that loves getting great deals was fighting the practical side of mean, and fortunately (I think) the practical side of me won. That $400 will end up going towards upgrading the dual core 2.0 G5 I'll be ordering this month. Still, a small part of me regrets not taking advantage of the offer, but I've always found it's better to buy something when you're sure you'll need it rather than when you think you'll need it. I still have a copy of FCE 1.0 that I jumped through hoops to get that I've never used. When I'm ready to graduate from iMovie, maybe I'll give FCE HD a try. And when I outgrow that & iDVD, maybe I'll give FCS a shot.
