My computer has simply become an ongoing struggle. I've reinstalled tiger many times, I take perfect care of it: HD kept nearly empty, no sketchy software, etc.

The following problems occur on a daily basis: upon waking from sleep, the mouse cursor will not appear and the computer will remain frozen for several minutes. Sometimes, for no reason that is apparent it will simply freeze up and take several minutes to go back to working, (the entire OS will freeze) sometimes accompanied by increased fan noise: this will happen under normal OS work. Performance is at best, well below potential. When running Logic 7.1 Express I am having multitudes of problems. My audio interface (which I have the newest drivers for installed) will frequently stop being recognized by the program. Sometimes when I activate phantom power again the program will recognize it, but more often this will freeze the entire OS.

To be honest, I continue to consider selling my computer. Problem is, I want to keep my nice monitor for use with Logic. So it means I can't really get an iMac, the mini is not powerful enough and I don't have enough money to shell out for a new (upcoming) Powerbook. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be getting very much for a first gen Power Mac G5, right? It's got a gig of RAM and an upgraded vid card as you can see from my sig, plus an added USB interface.

Anyone experiencing similar problems? Is it worth it taking it in to an Apple Store or reseller and throwing cash at the problem?

Didnt apple come up with a fix for those early models that had all those issues? I would go to Apple site and look for some info. I remember hearing of the firmware fix for the 1.8s maybe that will work for yours too.

That firmware update is only for the single processor 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5. There were no reported major issues with the single processor 1.6 GHz PowerMac G5. I would take it an Apple Store and see if they can determine whats wrong with it. I sounds like a hardware problem definitely since you've reinstalled the OS many times.

Did you try only using the stock RAM? Bad RAM can make a computer do weird things.

I used to have one of these with no problems. But if I remember correctly there was disk that came with the powermac that you could boot off of and check if there were any hardware issues. I ran it a few times, just for the heck of it. I would try that first if you have the disk.

Of course I have.

I would think it's a hardware problem. Did you upgrade the memory recently or any other hardware change before the problems started to happen?
