Had to restore iPhone, now can't do iCloud backup

I had to do a full restore on my iPhone 6. Backed up on iTunes on computer first, an an iCloud backup.

Did restore,, from iTunes, set back up etc. I normally use iCloud for backups, I have 20Gb plan.

Now I tried to initiate an iCloud backup it says not enough space.

Says my iCloud photo library is 13.5Gb
Next iPhone backup is 5.8Gb, so not enough space.

Before restore it was backing up fine, so presume that after restore it's "ID" or something?

Anyone help I'm stuck....

Prior to restoring your iPhone, did you have "iCloud Photo Library (beta)" turned OFF, and now it is ON?

If it always was turned on, did you change the photo storage option? (i.e. do you have "Optimize iPhone Storage" selected, or "Download and Keep Originals" selected?) A 5.8 GB backup is very large, indicating that you may be carrying around a lot of photos and videos on your device, so maybe your iCloud Photo Library settings changed, thus putting a lot of photo/video content on your iPhone that wasn't necessarily loaded on the device before.

iCloud photo beta was on before and after.

Optimise iPhone storage is checked, think was beforehand to, ity did say needs to upload once connected to WiFi 990 items though?

I do have quite a lot of photos and pics on my iPhone, 5.8Gb worth

Very confused as even if I delete the iCloud backup it will only according to the settings get my 1.8Gb back

Strange, can you see how big your last iCloud backup was? Just wondering if it is bigger now, or if the next backup would be the same size but can't proceed because the rest of your iCloud storage was taken up by (an increased) iCloud Photo Library.

Sorry, this probably isn't a whole lot of help. My feeling is that iCloud Photo Library is not ready for primetime (it is 'beta' after all) so I'm very leery of turning it on on my iOS devices, thus have limited knowledge of how it should work. Even once iOS 8.3 and Yosemite 10.10.3 (i.e. Photos) come out, I'm not so sure I'll flip the switch on iOS or my Mac ... maybe I'll sit back and let the dust settle out.

Last iCloud backup states 1.8Gb.

To be honest not sure what the iCloud photo library beta is, I just checked it! I take it it's my photos from my iPhone going into the cloud? Is it only from iPhone?

So should I switch off the iCloud photo library? Well I lose photos? How do I view these iCloud photo library photos?

I also have an iMac with Yosemite on if this makes any difference.

From what I understand, when you enable iCloud Photo Library (beta) the following things happen:

- iOS Camera Roll and My Photo Stream merge into (and are replaced by) Photo Library. This seems like a good idea, since I hate having to delete bad photos from two places.

- Photo Library will hold full resolution photos and videos you take from your iPhone. Seems good, since previously the only way to get video into iCloud was to upload to a Shared Photo Stream.

- The photos you see on your iPhone will be reduced resolution to save space (if "Optimize iPhone Storage" is selected). I think the resolution is somewhat dynamic depending on how much capacity you have on your device. Otherwise, if you select "Download and Keep Originals" the local copy will be full resolution as well as iCloud.

- Photo Library is not automatically purged, whereas "My Photo Stream" is only the last 30 days or 1000 photos, whichever criteria is met first. (Note: on your iOS device "My Photo Stream" can hold more than 30 days of photos since it is storing local copies, up to the 1000 photo limit, but iCloud itself is only the last 30 days).

- Your "Photo Library" will now count against your iCloud capacity, whereas "My Photo Stream" did not. I think Shared Photo Streams will not count against your capacity either way though.

- Since you no longer have a "My Photo Stream" your Mac can't access your photo stream or Photo Library (unless you're running a beta of 10.10.3 with the new Photos app).


I believe at this point if you have turned Photo Library ON, and now you want to turn it OFF, you're given up to 30 days to download copies of photos from iCloud. After that, any photo older than 30 days will be deleted.

I'm presuming when Yosemite comes out of beta and the photos app works, that all photos I take on my iPhone go into iCloud photo library? Surely this will mean, even for the average user, numerous more Gb if iCloud supposed is going to be required? e.g. My iPhoto library is over 100Gb?

Since I have not turned on iCloud Photo Library, I can only guess ... and my guess would be that what's in iCloud Photo Library now would appear in your "My Photo Stream" which will re-activate once you turn Photo Library off. You would then have 30 days to save from your My Photo Stream.

Or, you may have access via www.cloud.com for 30 days.

Or both of the above.

Yes, that's the idea, but only if you turn it on on your iPhone (as you have the option now).

Yes, I believe that is what it means. But you will have the option to not turn on iCloud Photo Library on your Mac, and I think the Photos app on your Mac will behave a lot like iPhoto does now, with all your pictures saved locally (only) after you transfer them from your iOS devices.

I think my iPhone after the restore has changed ID/device no/hash ID or something.

I've just opened my bank app and it's required me to "register my device for banking"

This previously was registered so my bank app had identified it as a new device and I had to go through the registration process again..

Realistically the only way you might be able to do it is you basically restore your phone and select to restore from your iCloud backup.
