Hadnbrake encoding option for lossless file

Hi

I wan' t to convert my DVD, Dvix and MKV in mp4 file to wath them with the new Apple TV.

For do that I use Handbrake but I don' t know what are the best settings to have a lossless convertion.

If i use "high profile" preset the "constant bitrate" oprion is set to 60%.

I must use 100% to have a lossless convertion? thanks!

There is no such thing as a 100% lossless video file conversion in HandBrake. "Constant Bitrate" option at 60% works rather well; very few people notice the difference between the original source and the resulting video file.

Setting that to 100% will almost invariably result in a file that's considerably larger than your source files. Don't do it. You can experiment with increasing it to 70% for near-lossless quality, but anything beyond that increases the size of the file significantly, with no noticeable quality increase.

Besides, in case you haven't noticed, that DivX file you have is lossy already.

Of course, I know it, and that is why I want to make better conversion to have a file that have the same source Dvxi, DVD, MKV quality.

I try to set it to 70%.

P.S. with 60% the new encoded file is 1 Gb with the original file about 1,4 Gb. Is the new encoding better than Dvix and so the file is smaller or the quality is too bad? thanks

HandBrake's H.264 codec is somewhat better than DivX, in my humble opinion.

However, the best judge is always yourself. Now that you have both files, play the same scenes from each file side-by-side and see if you are satisfied with the result.

Hi,

I have alot of downloaded .avi that I was converting using handbrake and metatagging using iFlicks.

But I just realized that encoding through iFlicks works on the new AppleTV and it works great, the file size is EVEN smaller than the original and the quality is great, much better than handbrake or just as good if you used constant quality of 90% on handbrake to retain quality. But with handbrake at that constant quality the file sizes are huge.

Let me know if this is cool, the files created are .mov and work on the AppleTV.
