hal.dll corrupted .HELP!!!!!

Hi Guys... I have this Macbook 1.83 Ghz and when I restart to the Windows OS, this message appear:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupted:
<Windows root>/system32/hal.dll.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

The only way I can do is reinstall back the Windows XP like I did before. BUT, before I do that, I want to backup all my files from Windows XP.

Please help me...!

you just have to reinstall windows over the old copy, back up your files, formate the partition and reinstall windows.

I tried. But in the Windows Setup, it said that I need to reformat the existing folder which I don't want.

Mac OSX should be able to access the windows HD, whether it's formatted in NTFS or FAT32, you won't have write access in NTFS but all you need to do is backup your files onto your OSX partition and then reinstall.

However, if you have FAT32 or are willing to install a driver (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ I haven't personally tested this, read on more about it), you should be able to simply get the file from a working install and copy over.

If that fails, try to see if you can boot from the CD and try to "repair" windows, this should reinstall the OS without effecting your data.

Do you have access to another WinXP box? Not that it's a perfect solution, but it might be quickest to see if the issue is truly limited to that one file by just copying it over from the other box. It's a DLL file so that should be fine.

Weird... did that to me a few months ago. I think i just got pissed and deleted the whole partition. Couldn't you search the partition for hal.dll and replace it with hal.dll from the install disk. Like drag 'n drop instead of through setup?

Edit: Guess that doesn't work. When you say it prevents copy+paste is it because your XP partition is NTFS? I believe there is some software which lets Mac OS X write on NTFS partitions.

I read a couple threads on this hal.dll file...interesting. It sounds like even re-installing can be tricky.

Also, I feel that this thread would be remiss without this picture. I feel no guilt or shame since I already tried to contribute.
