I've got a Macbook Pro (Penryn 2.4) and I thought I would have a go at installing Half-Life 2 on my Bootcamp partition, seeing as I can't play it under Leopard!

Installed it no problem, fired it up and set the resolution to 1440x900 (16:10) with most details settings on high, hoping the 8600M GT would provide powerful enough and I was really satisfied...40-60fps which is pretty damn good IMHO :)

Problem was, even though I had set the fan speed at 4,000rpm with smcFanControl before I rebooted into Bootcamp...after about 10min the fan speeds started to pick up and before I knew it they were at 6,000rpm!

I used speedFan under Windows XP to double check and the CPU Cores were over 60ºC (not unusual as I got the same temps with Quake 4 under Leopard) but the NVidia GPU has nearly hitting 90ºC!

Just wondering...is this normal?

I don't see what the problem is?

It's a good thing that the fans are speeding up. If they didn't, your video card would fry. It's totally normal for the fan speeds to increase.

Is it normal for fans that are already at 4,000rpm (providing I thing, adequate cooling) to ramp up to 6,000rpm after 10min of gameplay?

If the system gets hot enough, yes.

You would rather have a 4000 rpm fan cooling a GPU going way pass 100 deg C, the safety limit then to have the fans goto 6000 rpm to cool the gpu down
