UB version costs extra!

Just an FYI - they made a universal binary version of this. You'd think this would be a free upgrade to the game, but it annoyingly costs $5 extra. You have to buy it online from macgamestore. So just be prepared to shell out a few more bucks after you buy it.

How is it annoying to pay a company for their work? Completely rewriting code to make an app native isn't done overnight...

you shouldn't have to pay extra for an update imho, especially for a game they don't even produce anymore

It's not an update; they completely rewrote the game to run natively.

You wouldn't complain if you had to pay to buy an old movie on current media, would you? 2001: A Space Odyssey came out in 1968 but currently sells on Blu-ray for $8.50 (http://amzn.to/tNdKB), a price that is justified by the work needed by a publisher to make older content compatible with current hardware.

So what about other developers like Valve, who support Team Fortress 2, Left4Dead 1 and 2 long after their release dates? It's been 3 years and they still dish out new weapons, game modes, maps, even a whole new menu screen+training modes.
Heck I do the same thing and I'm just a little indie dev with limited time and resources.

For a studio as big, profitable and popular as Bungie you'd expect a free UB update. It is just an update - there is nothing new on the front end.

Not sure why you're comparing films. It'd make more sense to compare to other games, like the above.

When a game is ported, the license (basically) states that you can't add features. If a bug exists on the PC side, it exists on the Mac side until the PC code is upgraded. If Microsoft released new weapons/modes/maps for the original Halo, you'd see the same thing on the Mac side. You won't, as Microsoft has no interest in promoting Halo on Mac.

It's not "just an update" when you have to rewrite the entire game.

Also be aware that I dont believe Bungie did the port on the mac side. I even remember reading somewhere that macsoft (who now is listed as the publisher) did not bring the original port over. They crafted the UB, which is far different than Valve supporting their own IPs.

On a seperate note it appears that they will waive the upgrade fee if you purchased the non-UB version after 2006. From their website: "Also, for anyone who purchased the non-Universal version of Halo for Mac after January 1, 2006, MacSoft will waive the shipping charges. Just send your request along with your registration code, your return address, and your original, dated sales receipt."
