Is Halo universal binary? If not will they be making it playable on Intel based Macs in the near future at all?

And of course the obvious question, will it be playable on a stock 1.83GHz? I know that upgrading the RAM will only improve performance because of the shared memory, but how will 512MB do?

Many thanks.

Well i've run halo in bootcamp on a 2.0ghz macbook with a gig of ram, and I have to say it didn't perform that well. Even on low settings, the gameplay was slow. I uninstalled it.

Okay thanks, might have to give it a miss then. Anybody know of any decent first person shooter games that will run on a MacBook? Universal binary if possible as I don't want to be running Windows XP........EVER:p

Halo is now a universal binary. Unfortunately, it seems that the UB is slower on Mac Pros than G5s. Remember though that the Mac port of Halo has always been crap, frankly...much slower than the PC version.

If you want the best performance for Halo on your MacBook, you'll need to run XP. Otherwise try Call of Duty 2.

Call of Duty is looking like a good bet (the first one), it is not Universal Binary, is there any way to play it?

I've heard about Rosetta, but what exactly does it do? I have also heard that is somewhat "cripples" performance:confused:

halo on 2ghz macbook

I think halo runs quite well on a 2 ghz macbook with a gig of ram, but i have the mac and pc versions and i noticed that the pc version runs MUCH BETTER than the mac version... on the mac version i have to turn everything down, on the pc version i can turn just about everything up... on multiplayer i get the best performance, on the campaign you do have to turn some graphics stuff down to get it to run quick enough... but its all relative... i wish you could get 128mb cards for the macbooks i didn't have the cash to get a macbook pro :(

but i still like what i got

Rosetta is essentially an emulator. It cripples performance because it translates PowerPC code (for G3, G4 & G5 Macs) into Intel Mac code. It's actually a very good emulator, but there will always be some performance loss. This is why most 3D games do not run well on emulators - there is an unacceptable performance loss. Call of Duty is not a universal binary as far as I know, so I don't think it would run as well as Call of Duty 2, even though the latter game is more demanding, because Call of Duty would have to run under Rosetta.

I'd stick to games that have a Universal Binary - Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is now a Universal Binary. It's an older game but a good one.
