HALP!! Bootcamp Win 10 cMP GPU Driver issue

Hey,

So after quite a bit of messing around i managed to get Win 10 Boot camped onto a seperate drive in my 2010 MP(OSX 10.11.4). Ran the Bootcamp installer for all the drivers and stuff with my monitor plugged in via my GT 120 (in slot 2 run DVI into an old 1080p monitor). Then tried to install the new nvidia drivers for the Asus STRIX 980 ti non-EFI(Slot 1 run DP1.2a to a 4k Monitor) aaaannnddd Black Screen on both monitors... the 980ti's monitor did not work at all in Windows either before or after the driver install. but now i don't have the GT120s monitor.

I have no idea why for some reason the monitor plugged into my 980ti will not work in Win 10 (works fine in OSX with Web-Drivers) and now i cannot see anything in windows to even attempt to roll the driver back. i can still hold option to boot to OSX to write this post but windows seems like its mad bricked and i am going to have to format and screw around reinstalling it again. remote login and screen sharing in Win 10 is not set up.

Any got any ideas?

You can't run the 120 and 980 at the same time. Nvidia dropped support for the 120. If you try to use both cards at the same time, Nvidia will attempt to load an older driver that provides a black screen on the 980.

This issue is also applicable for the NVidia 8800GT (Mac EFI) and a EVGA GTX-670-FTW-4GB (PC) installed. I had to exchange the NVidia 8800GT (Mac EFI) with an ancient ATI 2600 HD (Mac EFI). The only way to update the drivers for the EVGA GTX-670 to its latest build.

Thanks! I wonder if there is a cheap EFI supported card as alternative to the 120 that the geforce drivers do support? I am putting off getting MVC to chip a PC card until the 1080 is released and compatible web drivers are available.

You can happily pair a cheap EFI 680 with the 980.

However, I recently came across a bug that caused the EFI 680 to run very slow in windowed productivity apps. Full screen games were fine. I don't know if this bug still exists (Nvidia updates Win drivers almost weekly) as I have removed the EFI ROM from the card.

But power source would be a problem if run 680 with the 980Ti.
 
EFI rom would have done 2 things:

Turned on PCIE 2.0

Changed ram speeds and timing (if different from original card)

That's it.

Unflashed 680 will be running at PCIE 1.0 bus speed in Windows.

WIll be tricky powering 680 and 980 on internal power.

Better off with an old 2600XT or a GT630/640 EFI card. They don't have Windows issue with drivers for 980.

The EFI card is only present for boot screen. Primarily because bootchamp no long works in El Cap.

It's a thermaltake 750w ATX from an old PC I had lying around. Powering 980ti's second 8 pin and the additional SATA drive on my apricorn PCIe card.
I modded the IEC plug on the PSU so it's IEC cable is soldered directly to the terminal to take up less space in the bay. Atm the side is off the case but I plan to take a pair of tin snips to the strip on the case side separating the two bays to allow the cables to pass through the gap. I've drilled a IEC cable sized hole in the back above the PCIE slots for the PSU IEC. Apart from that I have a connectPSU to molar to F-SATA to boot the additional PSU. It's a bit ghetto atm but it will work once finished.

You should look at the Pixlas mod on this forum. It's really easy and reversible.

Powering a card with one connector to internal PSU and other to a separate external PSU is a sure fire way to burn up a card.

Maxwell cards especially do NOT like this. Either go 100% from machine, or 100% from external PSU.

Mix & match will get you a card that shorts machine out after a few botched starts.
