Hello,

I hope someone can help me out. Even if you are not familiar with the game you may be able to help.

I would like to play Grid (car racing) multiplayer on mac over the internet. The game says it requires GameRanger for online games however this program is not currently compatible with Mavericks. It also has a LAN option.

So I am wondering can I use Hamachi to play LAN over the internet? My understanding is Hamachi creates a virtual network/tunnel over the internet. If so is it as simple as installing Hamachi on each computer and creating/joining the hamachi network? Or are there other network settings that need to be set on the mac computers?

I have used hamachi in the past for windows games many years ago but when launching Grid I notice that the LAN setup automatically finds games within your network... there is no option to enter an IP address to join... I am wondering whether this will be a problem when trying to find games over the "virtual network."

Any help is much appreciated.

It might be problem.
Discovery of game sessions on LAN often depends to network broadcast (one to all). Network brodcast is usualy blocked from propagating to VPN.
This behaviour may be configurable (I haven't used hamachi in years so I don't know if it is)

Thanks for the reply.

I assume (if it is even possible) that this would be done through hamachi software rather than changing network settings on the computer?

I'm guessing it probably won't work and I have not heard of anyone doing this with the mac version. However I have heard of people playing Grid (windows version) using Hamachi and it appears to involve some tinkering with windows network settings. It is a shame they can't allow you to simply join by inputing an IP address.

Hopefully others can provide input too. Maybe you know of an alternative to GameRanger that will work on mac (Mavericks)?

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I am the OP - I had trouble logging in on my macbook hence different user, but it is working on my mac now.

Sorry, but there is no solution for GRID until GameRanger is fixed in Mavericks. Hamachi might work but it is not supported and we haven't tried it so we cannot offer any suggestions.

Newer games we have stopped using GameRanger and have moved to using Steam for the online elements.

Thanks for the reply. I just hope that GameRanger is eventually updated to support Mavericks (and Yosemite). I just wonder whether it will ever happen!

We'll see I believe a number of things that GameRanger does are against Apple security policies (which is why GameRanger support needed a separate support helper application to use online modes for recent App Store games).

This combined with some of the GameRanger Mac libraries being older (GameRanger was first released around the same time as Mac OS 9) there is a a lot of changes required. The last update I read was on FaceBook.
