Hi all,

I've been using Handbrake for about a year now. I'm not on the newest version, but on the version before that.

I've been converting my movies in hopes of setting up a way to watch them on my TV, and also to be abel to take with me when I travel. The original plan was to set up a mac mini as a HTPC, then the plan changed to getting an Apple TV, and now the plan has changed again (and will most likely stay) to getting a WD HDTV Live and plugging an external hard drive into it. When traveling I keep my movies on a small external hard drive and watch them on plex with my dell mini 9 hackintosh.

I pretty much stay with the presets and use "Universal" 99% of the time. If I'm encoding a TV show I may use some of the advanced settings (Deinterlace, detelecline, etc..) but I really have no idea what I'm doing. I always increase the Quality slider to 62-63% and go from there.

My question... am I chosing the right settings for my intended useage? Would you recommend another way to go about it to get best results? I don't need subtitles and all that good stuff. Size isn't immensely important to me with the price of storage being so low. Since I'm not suing an Apple TV, should I be looking at a different preset? I can lways convert for my ipod (5g) and my iphone with VisualHub if I need (I think).

Any pointers? Thanks!

I start with the AppleTV preset, then click to add ipod5g support. That has been working very well for me, and results in a file playable across both devices.

I've handbraked about 30 DVDs, certainly not a huge run by any means, but they all look good to me. I'm playing them on a 50" plasma via HDMI to an apple tv. They also play nicely on a 2G ipod touch and an iphone 3g.

Um, frankly thats impossible. The Atv preset uses bframes. the 5.5 g ipod support just adds an atom which tells the 5g iPod to play a 640 x xxx movie (old vestigial code) that does not override the fact that the atv preset uses bframes which are completely unplayable on that iPod. You should check your encodes and settings.
