Handbrake and popular file output formats

I'm kind of new to this but I went and converted my dvd movies using handbrake to .avi's. Now I went and read the latest snapshot notes for handbrake here: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12464 and note that when handbrake 9.4 does get released it will no longer support .avi files. So, my question is, what are the most popular output formats for me to convert my dvd's to using handbrake. I watch them on my iPod Touch, my laptop 13" and a 24" Samsung Monitor.

If you want them to be compatable with AppleTV and iPod then you want to convert them to H.264 in a m4v container. The easiest way is to just use the Apple Universal preset in Handbrake.
