Overall I've had pretty good success converting videos using HB. I have been using the iPad preset and lately the Universal preset in anticipation of getting an ATV2 for Christmas. I've noticed though when I try to convert older B&W videos, the results are not so great. I seem to get lines in the video that look terrible. Why would older videos like this give such bad results? Plus I've noticed when converting these older videos, it takes a lot longer to convert them for some reason.

Not sure what the source material is. Videotape? I assume you're capturing it with some sort of device first? Most likely your best bet is to turn on "deinterlacing" in the handbrake filters. Do a search for that and you'll be on your way.
