Hi All.

I've been ripping my DVD collection using Handbrake. My primary purpose was to have material to stream to my AppleTV, and so I've been using the ATV2 preset settings. No problems, and I'm happy with the quality/filesize tradeoff.

Then, on a whim, I decided to take some rips and transfer them to my iPhone 4S. iTunes doesn't allow me to drop the TV shows into the phone. Huh... not entirely sure why, but I'm guessing it doesn't like the resolution or bitrate or something. Unfortunate, but not a dealbreaker. Then I tried to put a movie in there... and it worked.

This is weird... different rips, same presets, some work and some don't. Can anyone explain why?

TIA.

Free space? Was the movie file smaller than the combined size of the TV shows?

Not a free space issue. Had well over 4GB free.

I think I've found a flaw in my initial logic. The video files I can play were ripped on my laptop, in AppleTV2 presets. The ones I cannot play were ripped on my Mini, with Legacy AppleTV presets. The ones that cannot play are .mp4 files with a bitrate of 2600kbps. Is that bitrate too high for the iPhone 4S?

Personally, I went for the catchall solution of the Universal preset. Files probably larger than I'd like, but happily works OK for iPad 2, iPhone 4S and ATV.

Found the problem. Have to use MPEG Streamclip to downgrade my ATV files for use on my iPhone (taking a 2600kbps file and skimming it back to 1600kpbs).

Not ideal, but since my ATV gets a LOT more use than the video app on my iPhone, it's doable.

Thanks for helping.
