is there a way to combine a 2 part (dual sided) DVD to be one file for the :apple:TV?

Try transcoding each as separate files, then open both in Quicktime. Copy and paste the second one at the end of the first one and do an export for the Apple TV. You'll likely only get AAC audio and not AC3. If it works, please report back here so others can benefit from your experience.

VisualHub allows you to "stitch" 2 or more files together. I did this on all my LOTR discs.

First I ripped the VIDEO_TS folders from each disc to my hard drive, then re-named the .vob files from the 2nd disc, so they were different from the files on the 1st (if you don't do this you'll only end up with half the movie because somehow they overwrite themselves). Then drag both VIDEO_TS folders into VisualHub (one at a time, chronologically), make sure you select the AppleTV H.264 settings, plus whatever crop info if desired, click "stitch videos together," then click the start button.

Worked perfectly for me.

This app was very usefull to me.

Yeah, DTOX works very well. It will remaster the two separate VIDEO_TS folders into one folder that you can then run through Handbrake. It's how I did the extended versions of the LOTR trilogy. Worked perfectly, and I got 5.1 surround out of it.

One other benefit to this method is now you have a nice single title source to use for any re-encodes you may want to do in the future without having to set everything up again.

can you explain how to do this a little better? I tried to combine the two separate VIDEO_TS folders with DVD2one but when I go to encode with Handbrake there are 2 separate titles, and the 2nd title only has 1 chapter. Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

If you use MetaX to tag your files it does not matter if your movie rip is in two or more pieces. As long as all the files say they are from the same movie and the track and disc numbers are correct AppleTV will see the files as one movie and only list it once in your movie list. When you play the movie AppleTV plays the files as if they are one file.

Wha?

So, if were, say, tagging Amadeus, I would tag side 1 as:
11
and side two as
12?

This works?

Yes - but use 1 and 2 (see image capture) under the Advanced tab there are track and disk fields - use these and the AppleTV will see the files as one.

This is very interesting, and I'm trying to see if I understand how to do this.

I have 4 .mov files (home movies) that I want to convert to h264 to put into iTunes and play on AppleTV. The files are actually 4 clips of a "single" movie. While I know I can do editing in iMovie, etc. I don't want to do that yet and just want to have these files available for viewing. I was thinking about "stitching" them together, but the MetaX idea is interesting.

After creating .m4v files, if I drag the 4 files into MetaX. Title them the same, "Christmas 2007" for instance, and then identify them as 1 of 4, 2 of 4, etc. Apple TV will see them as one?

Yep - as long as they are all tagged with the same name and the appropriate track and disk numbers it will show and play as one. I have done this with all my LOTR titles and a lot of concerts that are on more than one disk - works great :)

So just to make sure we are on the same path- this is what you would need to do:

Title on all files set to: "Christmas 2007"
File 1: track "1 of 4" Disk "1 of 4"
File 2: track "2 of 4" Disk "2 of 4"
File 3: track "3 of 4" Disk "3 of 4"
File 4: track "4 of 4" Disk "4 of 4"

(You may only need to do track or disk - I always do both so Im not sure if both are needed)

Thank you very much. I will give this a try tonight when I get home.

I just tried this and it didn't seem to work. I made sure to tag them with the same name just change title/disk 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 but both show up on the :apple:TV now.

Try labeling the Album the same name too... (I have both done on mine as well, forgot to mention that...) The Title and Album names must be the exact same on all the files.

I've tried this and it doesn't seem to be working. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong.

Can you do a screen grab of both windows? (Info and Advanced) {Im at work and don't have access to my files unfortunately - Ill double check the settings when I get home}

The title and album name are exactly the same.

Okay Im home now and have it figured out (that will teach me - trying to answer questions while having the Flu for a week is not a good idea! LOL).

Make sure you have all the titles marked as part of a Compilation on the advanced panel in MetaX as well (you can do that through iTunes as well).

I just tried and it worked for me... so if your still having problems let me know. Sorry I missed that last thing... gotta drink more airborne :)

Rip the two discs you want to combine. Then launch DTOX and click on the middle button ("Make a movie-only copy or join multiple movie titles"). Add the first VIDEO_TS folder.

In the left sidebar, click on "Settings" and make sure that Output is set at "DVD-R(W)DL" to ensure that DTOX doesn't do any compression.

Then click on "Title" and make sure the title you want is selected. If you did a movie-only rip using MTR, then it will be selected automatically.

Then select the audio track you want. Ditto for Subtitles if you want any.

Then click on "Cells" and make sure there are no zero cells (either file size or duration). Usually there won't be any.

Then, at the bottom, click the "++" button and add the next VIDEO_TS folder. Go through the same steps listed above for that folder.

Then click the green button at the bottom, choose "File Set" as the output and a save location and let it run. When finished, you will have one VIDEO_TS folder you can run through Handbrake.

I have thought about doing the same with my LOTR extended trilogy. My only hangup is kinda silly, but when Tolkien orignally wrote them he intended for it to be one book, but he subdivided it into Book 1, 2, ..6. So each book if you read them actually says Book 1 and Book 2 in Fellowship through Book 5 and Book 6 in Return. So when I ripped them previously I actually name them Book 1 and so on. Combining them would change that. Not sure I want to.

Sidenote, does anyone else have the problem that when they rip to HB the Fellowship extended that the first disk cuts off in HB right at the end before it goes to black when Pippin or Merry is talking about the Quest thing, by the way where are we going part.

I actually thought of the compilation idea and tried that last night before I wrote. That didn't seem to help either.

Oh, I think you just sold me on DTOX! Time to go order!
