handbrake encoding length question

I already tried to post this on the official handbrake forum but they would not let me.

i wanted to convert a 5.5gb mkv video file which is 720p for my iPad. when i put it in handbrake i select the apple tv preset and the only settings i change are in the pictures settings (i changed the resolution to match the sources which is 1280x780) when i hit start it said that it would take 12 hours. is this normal or have i selected the wrong settings. also for files which are 1.4gb 720p mkv it takes 3 hours.

i have an imac 10.5.8.

That doesnt sound right. I dont mess with handbrake that much. Ive used it, but the best one out there is Visual Hub..if you can still find it....you can..but wont get into that.
Thers a new freeware out there(new to me) Video Monkey, pretty neat. When all else fails I use ffmpegX. Which will do ANYTHING. You can always open the mkv in Quicktime7 and just save it as a mov or 3gp. I think it opens mkv. I cant fnd one to experiemnt with. I have another app that I use. called ANYDVDConverter. It sounds misleading but it converts common video formats to iphone, ipod, xbox etc etc. Its very GUIish and easy.
But Visual Hub has the ability to "sew together" short mp4s etc. I havent seen this much.
There are so many. Before I would "fry" my motherboard for 12 hours I would try a nother app.

1.4gb=3hr
2.8gb=6hr
4.16gb=12hr

Sounds right figuring it out that way. I've had it speed up once it gets going, but for something that big I'd have my dad do it on his fast Mac pro.

is ffmpegx good at retaining quality because most of the mkv video files i use are 720p

You can download iPad presets and import them into Handbreak.
