Handbrake Help for TV Shows

I have several shows on dvd which list say 20 files when I put them in HB. Most of the files are easy to tell which are the regular episodes(by the lenght of play) but often it is difficult to tell which are bonus, commentary versions, etc. If fact, I think i have ripped the commentary files and the regular and I can't tell the difference so you must have to pick an alternate track to make it work? Does anyone have experience with this and have any suggestions? I end up ripping them all and deleting most of the files which is a waste of time.

yep. play the dvd in dvdplayer.app and note which show(s) you want and which title and audio track they are. Then just setup the HB queue with what you want if you want to do them all at once.

Hard to say. I've had one DVD that showed three tracks of 1 hour 40, 1 hour 50, and 2 hour 20 minutes: The 1 hour 40 was the movie, the 1 hour 50 was the movie with 10 minutes of garbage added (bits and pieces from all kinds of places in the movie) and the 2 hour 20 minutes was the movie with 40 minutes of garbage added.

Just an important thing for TV shows: Check whether you need deinterlacing. Go through the ten or so preview pictures that you get, find some with lots of movement, and click deinterlacing to see if it improves (interlaced material shows jagged edges in moving parts).

Any risk in just choosing deinterlacing? Where do you see preview pictures? I've never seen this on Handbrake?

For 30 minute shows, I see a lot of 23 minute files with a few 43 minutes files sprinkled in. Its confusing as I'm not sure if they are double episodes or just extra crap. If I play in DVD player, how do I associate the differenct files with what is showing up in HB? Are they necessarily in the same order as the Menus?

That depends on your DVD player/software - mine has an "On Screen Display" I can bring up.

No, not always. You might find DVD title 1 is the company logo, and titles 2,3,4,5 are the four episodes. However, sometimes the mapping from episodes to DVD titles can seem random, which why the only way to know for sure before doing the encoding, is play them on your DVD player and make a note of the title/chapter details.

those are probable the directors cut, or with deleted scenes of something. These get advertised as "special features"

I admit that only sometimes are they interesting, but look at it this way - you get to pick the version you want, rip it, and never have to faff about with the stupid DVD and its fiddly menus ever again

Where do you see preview pictures? I've never seen this on Handbrake?

The windows version of HandBrake doesn't have that feature, its only in the OS X version.
