Handbrake (.m4v) HD Question

I've started to convert my own movies to Apple TV 2 compatible .m4v files using Handbrake.

Recently I downloaded some movies, also encoded with Handbrake.

My question is, how do I encode it so that iTunes and the Apple TV 2 recognize it as HD?

If you're not sure what I mean, look at the attached picture at the bottom. You can see the ones I downloaded (encoded in Handbrake by the original encoder) have the little HD symbol, and my encodes don't. I've been using the Apple TV 2 preset in Handbrake.

I've been using MetaX, which doesn't offer that option. That could be why I'm so damn confused, haha.

I'll try Subler, I guess.

actually metax does offer that option. It is a drop down video tab. Right next to video kind, there is a HD drop down, yes or no.
 
iFlicks does this too. It has Rules to add this in that are enabled by default. The one thing that has been an issue is when I convert a DVD, I use ATV2 present in HandBrake and the Anamorphic video height/widthis larger than what the rule is looking for. So, all of my DVDs had the HD moniker and had to remove them and reimport and then turn off the HD tagging in iFlicks and run it again. I just make sure to change this when I do HD batches vs SD batches (if I was smart I'd just update the Rule in iFlicks...:rolleyes:)

I saw that he was on a mac based on his screenshot and I believe that metax is no longer supported on the mac side.

I'm using the most current version of MetaX for Mac OS X (Version 2.4.6), and I don't have that option. At least it's not where you said. It's not so bad using two apps to do my tagging though. It only takes about 10 seconds per title to open in Subler and click the HD button.

If anyone knows of a reliable app that does it all for sure (in Mac OS X), I'd be interested in checking it out.

Subler does most of it, more or less, but it can't delete certain things done in MetaX or other programs that it doesn't offer. For example, Purchase Date (from MetaX). You can delete it in Subler, but when you save it, the Purchase Date thing returns as though it wasn't touched. Also, when labeling Video Type in Subler, if you select "Movie" it changes to "Short Film" when opened in another program.

So, as of right now, the most reliable, and sort of simple way I've found, is to open the file in Subler, delete all the random crap people put in to advertise themselves (Producer: Holyroses) and click the HD button. Then, open the file in MetaX, and add everything you want, like actors, film rating, etc.

But neither program will do it all completely. So I use both. Time for tagging each file, with info, and artwork, is approximately 45-60 seconds (MetaX having IMDB and such built in makes things pretty expedient).

For the record, I have nothing against Holyroses, just the first person I thought of because I download her stuff religiously.

Last time I checked, the free version of identify 2 was much better than MetaX on the Mac. The free version of identify 2 is so good that it hurts sales of the full version which is only $10. I bought it and iFlicks since both have very responsive developers and offer great software.

I too had this OCD of no HD labels driving me crazy!!!!! Ididn't know how to do it or if I would ever be able to do it!

Thank you so much that I can now label my blurry rips as HD!!!

I'm so happy! But have a big job of labelling about 600 movies.................

Oh well!

I second iDentify2. I have the paid version, but the tagging options are very complete, even letting me tag MPAA ratings. Also a great way to get descriptions and box art onto movies using the IMDB code.

Hi Mike,

If you're interested in quicker way to do this, I wrote a series of Automator Actions and Services focused on automating the rip, encode and tagging process. The thread is a sticky at the top of this forum:

The Service you'd be interested in called "Batch Rip • Add HD Tag", but there's also Services that automatically add all the tags and cover art via themoviedb and tmdb APIs. To use them, you just control-click on the files you'd like to tag, select the service and off it goes.

You really have to experiment...I do most at RF 20 (default) for HD encodes. I find it provides a nice balance between quality and file size. Since the Apple TV is already lower quality (720P encodes vs 1080P encodes) I see no reason to go for excessive bitrates on these encodes. It also depends on the movie, the ones I plan to watch over and over I may go for a higher quality encode. In most cases (normal use) you won't see much if any difference, just a much bigger file size. Now if you have a shiny new 70" LCD you may want to up the bitrates. :D
