I have some handbrake ripped movies of 12gb 1080 that wont play on my unhacked atv 2, so I tried to stick them on a usb like I used to to watch on my ps3, but they just wont go! error code 0 it says, the previous version of handbrake made mp4 s, not mv4 s, and I could put these on a usb no problem at all, any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

2 things

1. You can change the file extension from m4v to mp4

2. I don't think that the PS3 can play movies over 4GB in size?

FAT32 - the only filesystem the PS3 will accept - has a 4GB limit. You can't copy a file >4GB to FAT32, so you must be using some other filesystem which the PS3 does not accept.

Use MKV2VOB to split the file in to 4GB chunks or (*shudder*) re-encode it to 4GB.

Thanks for the 4gb tip about the ps3. My problem still stands, any new movies I encode using the latest version of handbrake will not go onto a usb stick, I have changed the file extension (just by simply renaming it, is that right though?) and it still won't drop onto a usb stick, very annoying. Surely someone else must have had this problem or is everyone here only streaming from mac to atv2?

2 more things... Are you using a Mac?

1 if you are using a Mac, is your thumb drive formatted as NTFS? If so you can't copy to the drive without installing some extensions on your Mac.

2 by default, every thumb drive that I have ever seen, is fortmatted in fat32 which means you can't copy any file over 4 GB to it.

M4V is actually an extension of the MP4 container, it isn't backwards compatible, you could try demuxing and remuxing with MP4box.

and it still won't drop onto a usb stick
Because the USB stick is FAT32 and your file is >4GB!

If the file is larger than that, you'll need to burn it to a DVD (single layer/DVD5 = 4.37GB, dual layer/DVD9 = 7.95GB) or steam it over the network.

No remuxing is needed. You can just change .m4v to .mp4

I do it all the time and have never had a problem.

There are features that aren't available when changing a m4v to mp4.
I think you lose chapter markers, ac3 soundtrack, and maybe soft subtitles.
