I know this isn't really a PS3 forum but you guys always have the answers and I can't find the solution anywhere else.

I've been using Handbrake to convert my DVD's to MP4 for use on my IPad using the AppleTV setting. The files work on the IPad very nicely but for some reason the PS3 won't see them.

I have the files on a D-Link DNS-323 NAS with the UPnP AV Server setup. The PS3 finds the server and all of the files on it with the exception of the
MP4 files. It sees MKV files (thought it reports they are unsupported), AVI, WMA, etc. but does not see the MP4 files and nothing I do makes them visible.

Any ideas?

Try using ps3mediaserver - I can stream mkv's from my computer to my ps3 with no problem.

I do have trouble with mp4's though.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try if I can't figure out the MP4 issue. I'm trying to use the server built into the NAS so that I can let the computers power down.

I convert to the AppleTV preset for both my PS3 and iPad. My media server is a Synology. The ps3 reads the rips from the server, no problem. Once in a while I have to reindex the media files for the Ps3 to play them. But generally it works without issues. FWIW.

Never used the PS3 as a media player, but is it possibly an extension issue--m4v versus mp4 for example? I had to adjust extensions to get Media Portal (win) to play the files I have been encoding for the iPad, but once that was taken care of they played without a problem.

The other issue could be that Apple TV is a fairly complicated profile IIRC. Do you know if the PS3 supports everything the profile uses (B-frames, etc)?

I could not read files created with handbrake on my PS3 until I renamed the extension from m4v to mp4 as you stated. After that, they play flawlessly.

I was using the AppleTV preset. I was wondering about the various codecs, etc., used in the conversion and whether or not it was creating an unreadable file. The thing that threw me was that it was not seeing files, unlike the MKV files which were showing up but just as an unsupported format.

I'll try changing the extension on one this evening and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Yeah, if you can't see them at all, I bet it's the extension. Good luck!

Changing the extension from m4v to mp4 did the trick though the movies are "jerky". I suspect that has something to do with size. I was playing with Avatar, which is a bu-ray rip of just over 4gb,on a wireless 802.11N network. I'm going to downsize it and see if that smooths things out.

Tried the downsize routine. Didn't work. Trying some other settings. Can anyone recommend any of the presets that they know work?

Playing mp4 movies

Hi,
I am trying to play mp4 movies from a dvd. I have downloaded vlc, windows media player and flip4mac and none of them is able to open it. I'd be grateful for any ideas you have.

Never got anything to work with the MKV file. Handbrake won't create a usable mp4 file and nothing else seems to want to convert the MKV file created by makemkv.

I gave ps3mediaserver a try and had a hard time wiit consistently finding the PS3.

So I went back to look at what I had done and realized that I already had what I needed on the computer; Air Video. It reads and will create a converted file on the NAS unit that the PS3 can read. It has different quality settings that allows for creating the file that you want.

Turns out that file stuttered when read by the PS3.

I did get a show to convert and work well last night using Windows Movie Maker. I made it last night and tried it this morning. Watched for a minute or two and it seemed to work perfectly.
