Handbrake Question

Quick Handbrake question.

If I rip a DVD using MacTheRipper, then encode the file with Handbrake using the AppleTV preset (w/ AC3 audio), can I then later rip the resulting .m4v file with iPhone presets?

Or will this mess up the audio/something else.

You won't be able to use the .m4v file as the source for handbrake. You could encode it twice with handbrake from the disk image: once for TV and once for the iPhone. Or you could rip one that is compatable with both. I have had some good results that look good on both.

You can re-encode it with Visual Hub, converting it into something compatible with the iPhone, but not with HB.

You can convert your m4v with iTunes, QT Pro or Visual Hub and lose some quality or you can encode with HB from the original rip for best quality.

You can also make ONE file that can be read both on AppleTV and iphone using the higher quality settings. iPhone will play resolutions higher than what they have "listed". There is another thread about it, and one user has done all the dirty work for us and posted his findings that are exceptional. Basically he showed a way to make one file that can be played on both AppleTV and iphone, and have AC3 track for appletv and stereo track for iphone. Absolutely brilliant. The only down side is that the resulting files are big 2gigs for a 90min movies, but beats having to encode twice and filling up itunes with 2 versions of every movie.

Gotcha - thanks for the replies.

Re-encoding the .m4v with VH will be convenient because I will convert the MTR rip to .m4v and delete the original [huge] file. Only occasionally will I then want to go to iPhone format. Nice to know I don't need the original Video_TS folder.

Mikie - you responded to some AppleTV questions I had a few weeks back in another thread. I ended up getting a Mini instead because I was worried about streaming (stuttering video) from an external drive hooked up to an AEBS. With the mini, you can connect the external drive(s) directly. It arrives tomorrow...hopefully, with Front Row, it will do the trick.

I will miss the fancy GUI on the ATV and also the download options but I'm hoping those features might trickle down to Front Row in the not too distant future.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, well, my thoughts are a bit muddled (at best. )

I think that Apple is trying to make a clear distinction between computer and appliance, and the Apple TV falls into the appliance role (now). I was glad they didn't go so far as to disconnect it from iTunes in an attempt to make a ITMS<->AppleTV appliance.

With that in mind, I think that Front Row will never have the ITMS HD rental access, and its interface needs to be more homogenous, to spread across all computer products.
