i am trying to get some of my new videos that have 5.1 surround sound to play on my 1st gen apple tv and i can't seem to get the audio right. i was wondering if i could get some help. i would like the audio to have the surround sound for my onkyo surround sound 7.1 (set up with only 5.1 right now) receiver and it would be nice to have it work on my imac that does not have surround sound as well. so my question is what do i set the audio settings for to get this to work. it seems like on certain settings i don't get any sound and on other settings i dont get surround sound. i've been checking to see if the file that is encoded has surround sound by using a program called videospec on the mac and its telling me that the audio is only 2.0 stereo.
i've tried so many settings i cant remember them all.
please help!!

In handbrake - there is an AppleTV preset. Use that.

In the Audio tab, click that and it should have 2 tracks listed. 1st one is the AAC (2 channel) and the 2nd one is the AC3 (5.1).

Assuming your source has a 5.1 track - don't change anything. If you are wanting to just test things quickly - I suggest doing only 1 chapter instead of the whole movie/tv show.

Everything SHOULD work if your source has 5.1, you are using the handbrake preset and you don't touch anything.

I'd also suggest downloading Subler - lets you check if you have aac and ac3 and move stuff around if they are in the wrong order and what not.

ok i have it set to the appletv preset for 1st gen. then audio the audio tab the first track is by default set to AAC (CoreAudio)-Dobly Prologic II-auto samplerate- 160 bitrate.
the second is AC3 ffmpeg 6 channel discrete-auto- 640 bitrate.
i was wondering with the 6ch discrete setting i hear there can be distortion. whats the main diference between dobly prologic II compared to ch discrete?

can you re clarify the settings... both tracks say 5.1 under the tracks part. when i leave the apple preset and check with videospec i says its only stereo. is it that the second track that appletv uses for 5.1 instead of the stereo somehow or do you have to select the track somehow in apple tv??
i will get subler and see if the settings are different.

thanks again for your help.
